My thoughts on FOX's coverage of the 2014 ICC Weekend 1

 

I usually don't post my thoughts and opinions of coverage, but with this being the first real test for FOX's soccer coverage, I thought I'd give my thoughts and ratings on the first weekend of overage.

BROADCASTERS:  B-

 Let's be honest here. FOX is going to find it difficult to beat the quality and chemistry the weekly broadcast teams at ESPN developed. I really liked the broadcast team of JP Dellacamera and Brian McBride. McBride was a little slow at the start, but by the water break I thought he had gained his groove and did a good job expounding on why plays were a penalty and why certain passes were made. Sure, he was rough around the edges, but I believe this was his first time acting as an analyst.

JP Dellacamera meanwhile doesn't provide the silence that most soccer broadcasters do. However for casual US fans, his style tends to be a plus as it helps the viewers understand certain terms and learn more about the sport, thereby making it more enjoyable as time goes along.

Mark Rogondino and Cobi Jones knew when to remain silent and didn't place a whole lot of emphasis in their commentary unless it was a dynamic play.

The sideline reporter is a little awkward outside of the pre and post games for these matches. It's really an unnecessary voice for the most part. Yet two to three times each match the play-by-play man was forced to throw it down to the sidelines to report on a story that took place earlier in the week, nothing that was going on in the game itself.

As for the worst broadcast team, as good as John Strong is when calling MLS matches, he really seemed to be forcing himself to ask questions that he thought Warren Barton might answer. And Barton frankly took too many pauses in his analysis and focused mostly on telling stories instead of describing the action. Do we really think saying "That's a good point" or "we'll see him probably score as well" is good analysis?

STUDIO SHOW: C-

Okay. Fox had a good studio in Rob King and Eric Wynalda. However FOX didn't really give them enough time to do any type of explaining. We saw them for the first 5 minutes introducing the lineups for the upcoming match, and we saw them at Halftime. Every time Wynalda actually shared some good points, he was quickly cut off by Barton, who didn't add any worthwhile contribution and really slowed down the broadcast. If you actually expanded it to half an hour and added a second decent analyst, then it could easily challenge ESPN's studio team during the World Cup. 

Fox also loses points here in that every network, outside of FOX, now joins the match as they are marching out of the stadium. They let us see the coin toss and hear the anthems. What we got from Fox instead was the opening lineups. Give yourselves the needed 30 minutes before each match Fox. You do it with UEFA Champions. There is no reason you shouldn't be doing it with the rest of your coverage, even if it is the preseason.

CAMERA ANGLES: D-

We only saw closeups on throw-ins and corner kicks. And even when we did get closeups, we still would eventually go back to a camera that frankly looked like it was at the top of the stadium. Yes, I realize that cameras from the bleachers are usually how soccer matches are shown. However most companies use more than 1 camera. Heck, even a BYUtv broadcast of soccer seemed more professional to me than most of FOX's camera angles.

STREAMING COVERAGE: C

Now I'm sure many people would wonder why I'm giving them such a low score here. I'm giving them a low score for two reasons. First off they were streaming on both Fox Sports Go and Fox Soccer 2Go. I actually thought this was a good idea as some fans, like myself, can't access Fox Sports Go since we don't have a "verified account supplement." However Fox loses two grades in my book for using two separate feeds for the broadcast. The smart thing would have been to save money and use their own feed for both sets. Instead they used the International Feed for Fox Soccer 2Go. While most of these announcers are recognized for their work in the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions Cup, it is foolish to spend extra money on a second streaming system using completely different announcers than using your own broadcast team. Then there's the entire archive issue. Fox Sports Go doesn't have a replay/ archive section. This really forces you to have to watch it live or not at all. I don't like those options.

The second reason I give them a C has to do with moving the start of the Real Madrid/ Inter Milan match from Fox Sports 2 to Fox Sports Go. I don't mind the move, but you should have at least placed it on Fox Soccer Plus. Anyone who tried to watch it on TV didn't get to see the starting lineups. We didn't get to hear any information about the clubs beforehand. Instead we got the first round of the UFC simulcast on FOX and Fox Sports 2, as FOX joined in on the "Tale of the Tape." Bad move Fox. Very bad move indeed.

OVERALL: C-

Fox has proven they can do a better broadcast with the NFL and NCAA events. What they haven't done here though is actually strive to learn from what ESPN and NBCSN have done for soccer coverage in the US. Continuing to broadcast like this will end up costing the game more viewers than it will help.

2014 Guinness International Champions Cup Tournament TV Schedule

The 2014 Guinness International Champions Cup comes to the US tomorrow night. Every matchup during the 2014 Guinness ICC will be televised on the networks of FOX and NBCSN.

ESPN Deportes and ESPN Deportes Radio will broadcast all the matches in Spanish, though two will be ESPN Deportes+ exclusives. I will not post the announcers for ESPN Deportes matches like I am doing in English, mostly because I don't have ESPN Deportes and they aren't listing them by each game on ESPN Media Zone. For those who are interested, ESPN Deportes soccer experts Fernando Palomo, Fernando Schwartz, Ricardo Ortiz, Richard Mendez, Andres Agulla, Giovanni Savarese and Tato Noriega will provide the play-by-play and analysis for their broadcasts.

FOX meanwhile has some familiar soccer voices for their matches. JP Dellacamera, who did more than half of the ESPN Radio matches during the World Cup and was the Fox Soccer MLS Game of the Week play-by-play man, will call two games on FOX and the championship for Fox Sports 1. John Strong, MLS Game of the Week broadcaster for NBCSN and longtime Fox Soccer announcer, is another familiar face for most US fans that will call two matches.

JP Dellacamera has been a regular with FOX since he became the voice of MLS on Fox Soccer, but most Americans would recognize him from his calls during the World Cup on ESPN Radio. Hopefully this is a sign that FOX will be using him as one of their regulars for their World Cup coverage come 2016 (Women's). It's a shame they aren't using him over Gus Johnson as the lead play-by-play man.

Every match-up will also be streamed live on Fox Sports Go should your carrier provide all the needed access using the Fox broadcasters listed above. NBC Sports Extra will stream the two NBCSN games. Every FOX game will also be shown live and archived on Fox Soccer 2GO using the international feed while NBC Sports Extra will have their games available archived on NBC Sports Extra for roughly 6 weeks with the NBCSN announcers.

To date ASN will be airing games from 5 conferences, with Conference USA being the largest of the 5. It looks like ASN will broadcast 2 to 3 games every Saturday for Sinclair affiliates to pick up. Fox Sports announces main CFB broadcast teams for 2014

A couple of months ago we learned that Tim Brando would be calling games for FOX this fall. At that time that was all that was announced. Today Fox has announced their top 3 broadcast teams for this fall.



 

Returning for another year on the Fox game of the week is the duo of Gus Johnson and Charles Davis. This year the duo will be joined by Molly McGrath, whom will take over the sideline responsibilities.

 

For the Thursday night game of the week, Fox has announced that Justin Kutcher and Petros Paradakis are out and Tim Brando is in. Tim Brando will join returning team member Joel Klatt for Thursday night games.

 Craig Bolerjack and Ryan Nece will make up one broadcast team.

 

Fox has also announced that longtime HBCU broadcaster Joe Davis has joined their ranks. Joe Davis joins the #3 broadcast team where he will be teamed with Joey Harrington and newcomer Kris Budden. They will cover the Saturday night game.

Additional broadcast teams will be released in the future, but it seems quite clear that Fox is trying to seperate their NFL broadcasters and NCAA college broadcasters. Here's the details released by Fox.

This list contains eight of the nine groups that broadcast college football nationally with their schedules. I am still waiting to see a finalized schedule from Touchdown Radio. Back by demand, it's the 2014 MLS TV Schedule. This guide will be divided into two parts this week. The first half will show all the MLS matches that take place. The second half will feature MLS teams in Friendly exhibitions that are being televised as many European Teams are over getting ready for the Guinness ICC Tournament.

Please note that there are additional matches taking place that aren't listed. As this guide focuses solely on the MLS, I wil only be posting MLS matches here, not every soccer match being televised. Sports USA to stream college football games online in 2014

Since 2008 ESPN Radio has been able to stream all their college games live online. In 2009 Compass Media Networks was created, and they started streaming all their college broadcasts live online that same season. Last year Westwood One joined the party and announced all their collegiate broadcasts, and virtually every sporting event they had the rights too outside the NFL, would be streamed online. While they do not stream their broadcasts on their website, Touchdown Radio has always allowed their affiliates to stream their broadcasts nationwide. This year Sports USA is joining the streaming crew.

 

Earlier this year Sports USA unveilied their new TuneIn Channel. On the channel they stream all of their podcasts- Conversations with Joe Morgan, The Fred Dryer Show, Leigh Steinberg on Sports, Odds Are with Jimmy Vaccaro, Snake's Takes with Jake Plummer, and Ted Soebel's Excellent Sports Adventure. Beginning this August Sports USA will use the channel for streaming of all their live broadcasts, outside of the NFL.

 

Not only will Sports USA broadcasts, outside of the NFL, be available on TuneIn, but they will also be available on Audingo and on iTunes. The live action will begin with Sports USA's presentation of the Little League World Series on August 23-24 before they begin weekly broadcasts with college football August 30 with the Arkansas/ Auburn game. The full schedule of games that will be streamed is listed below.

 

If any additional information is made known to me before this fall, I will be sure to post it. However I can assure everyone that we will have links to all the national collegiate radio games being broadcast this fall. Most of the links we use will be for TuneIn, but for fans that would like to hear the broadcasts that haven't been able to before now, this will be a great year. The only question is which games will be the most interesting to tune in for?

Look out ESPN, here comes the American Sports Network

 Ok, so I just wanted to make the title sound interesting. Starting this fall fans will be able to watch college athletics on a new home, the American Sports Network. The American Sports Network, or ASN as it will be most commonly called, is a new network owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group.

Basically Sinclair Broadcast Group is entering into live sports broadcast. They will produce more than 200 live events each season that Sinclair stations can pick up for broadcast. Most of the games will air on CW and My Network TV owned stations, but bigger named groups can pick up games that don't conflict with their regular schedules.Currently only Sinclair stations have the rights to the games, but they are in talks with other interested stations about making it a regional package outside of Sinclair.

To date ASN has five conferences that have signed up with them: Conference USA, the Big South, the CAA, the SoCon, and the Patriot League. So far Sinclair's schedule for CUSA and the SoCon has been announced. Events on American Sports Network include college football, men's and women's college basketball, women's college soccer, and college baseball to start with.

Most ASN games will not be streamed on ESPN3, though some may end up due to the conferences affiliations with ESPN (SoCon). However individual stations airing the games will have the rights to stream them on their websites. Conference USA has already announced that the games for them ill be streamed on the C-USA Digital Network, and the CAA has confirmed that CAA.Tv will carry their games. The new network acts as a supplement to games that have already been picked up by each conferences main broadcast partners and does not replace any current existing contracts.

Supposedly good things come to those who wait, For those who are interested, here's your  MLB announcing assignments from Week 15. No combined MASN telecast this year for Orioles/ Nationals, and something tells me the fans are more than pleased with that decision.

Outside of your regular broadcast assignments, you had Rick Rizza and Aaron Goldsmith filling in for Dave Simms, and you had Luis Gonzales taking the games before the All-Star Break for FS Arizona. Most of the others were the regular broadcast teams, unless you want to count the fact that Don Orsillo is taking off 5 games, 3 before the All-Star Break and two after. Jon Rish is filling in for him during those games. Hope you all enjoy.
