I am not going to remove the Buffalo at Cincinnati game info. I have never intended to remove it because the game did start, and these broadcasters were calling the game. They all deserve great credit for how they handled the traumatic events that occurred, and that is the primary purpose of this blog, to provide a list of the broadcasters calling the game.

With that being said, I am well aware that the game was cancelled and will not be made up because of Damar Hamlin's cardiac arrest. I am not going to comment on what happened, how much time was played, how the league was criticized, or anything else that followed. I encourage you to go and read the PROFESSIONAL REPORTS (not fan theories and speculation) as to what happened afterwards. That is all that I will say about the Damar Hamlin cardiac arrest.

News and Notes and Broadcast Assignments by Rudy Martzke (Dec 16-18, 2022 edition)

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Best line: WJOX-FM’s Cole Cubelic, on the McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning show, discussing the Music City Bowl’s over/under at 31, “Will either team run 31 plays in the game?”

Funniest exchange: ESPN's Joey Galloway quipped to Steve Levy, "I'm jealous. You've done quite a few of these Bahamas Bowls, but it's the first time you've brought me."
Levy replied, "Another advantage,  when you do the national Championship you don't get to wear these type of shirts."

Top Stat: ESPN's Joey Galloway revealed that Miami (OH) QB Aveon Smith is the first QB to lead the Red Hawks in both rushing and passing yardage in the same season.

Top Reporting: ESPN's Kris Budden reports that UAB interim coach Bryant Vincent cleared out his desk 10 days before the Bahamas Bowl so that incoming new coach Trent Dilfer would have it for recruiting purposes even though he needed it for bowl prep.

Top Analysis: ESPN's Joey Galloway shared that a key to developing a young QB is to make sure you always gain positive yardage on 1st Down so you don't have to force them into third and heroic situations, which often result in turnovers.

Funniest exchange: ESPN's Steve Levy commented,  "Joey, I've heard you were pretty fast in the day. "
Galloway replied, "I've heard that to."
After calling the next play Levy went back to that. "I've done some research on my partner, and is it really true that you ran the 40 in under 4.2 seconds?"
Galloway, "Yes, it was definitely under 4.2."
Levy, "I had you clocked at 4.18."
Galloway, "Some people say 4.17, but either way it was fast. "
Levy concludes, "Way to go speedster."

Top Stat: ABC's Tom Hart points out that SMU had the sixth most passing yards in the FBS, but tonight BYU has held them to 86 as the 4th Qtr starts.

Top observation: ABC's Tom Hart points out that SMU usually likes to go up tempo, but all the replays and injuries have limited SMU's ability to go up tempo tonight.

Top Stat: ABC's Tom Hart points out Ben Bywater's earlier 76-yard Pick 6 was the first Pick 6 in New Mexico Bowl history.

Top Stat: ABC's Kevin Neghandi points out that Frank Gore Jr's 329-rushing yards in the LendingTree Bowl is a new record for most rushing yards by a single individual in any bowl game.

Top Point: ABC's Tom Hart points out that BYU's offense is becoming too predictable. Since Maiava-Peters threw his interception, BYU has run the ball on 15 straight plays (not including punts).

Top Stat: ABC's Tom Hart points out that SMU is 0/3 on 2- point conversion attempts this season, yet they're going for 2 to win the game.

Top analysis: ABC's Brock Osweiler points out that most teams only have 2-3 2-point plays on their chart because they're so rare.

Top Stat: ABC's Tom Hart says the last successful onside kick recovery for SMU came back in 2015.

Interesting Point: ABC's Tom Hart says that if BYU holds on to win the New Mexico Bowl, it'll be the first time he remembers a team winning without completing a pass in the 2nd Half.

Top Analysis: ESPN's Dave Neal pointed out that while a lot of the method's with running plays appeared to be the same, Boise State came out with a whole new set of plays and offensive formations in the 2nd Half that allowed their running attacks to explode.

Top Stat: ESPN's Dave Neal shared that 1/3 of North Texas WR's Jyaire Shorter's catches for his career have resulted for TD's, and for the season 11 of his 24 have been TD's (nearly 50%).

Best huh comment: After a lengthy review to determine off-setting unsportsman like penalties, ESPN's Dave Neal stated, "After all that we get off setting penalties? Why don't we just line up and play ball and just say let's forget about trying to figure it all out?"

Top stat: ESPN's Dave Neal shared that UConn football went 4-32 from 2018-2021. Yet they went 6-6 in Jim Mora Jr's. first year as head coach in 2022.

Top Stat: ESPN's Dave Neal shared that Boise State QB Taylen Green is the first Boise State QB ever to have 2 100-yard rushing performances in a single season.

Top Stat: ESPN's Dave Neal points out that in the first half of the Frisco Bowl North Texas and Boise State combined for 16 points. However they combined to score 36 in the 3rd Quarter.

Top Analysis: ESPN's Dave Neal shared that QB problems aren't always about passes and incompletions. They can be caused by different metrics. For example of Austin Aune's 15 interceptions in 2022, 5 were returned for Pick 6's.

Strongest comment: ESPN Radio's Freddie Coleman telling listeners,  “UAB's 4th Down attempt was a sign of supreme arrogance and contempt because Miami (OH) had only made 2 1st Downs total in the game to that point, and now you've given them a short field.”

Top Foresight: ESPN Radio's Freddie Coleman shared that a 4th Down attempt failure typically boosts the other teams offense. Miami (OH) came back and doubled their 1st Downs for the game to 4.

Top Stat: ESPN Radio's Freddie Coleman shared that UAB WR Trea Shropshire should be double teamed at all times, because he came into the Bahamas Bowl averaging 21 yards per catch.

Oops Award: ESPN Radio's Kevin Winter just said 21 seconds remain in the ball game. However it's 21 seconds remain until Halftime.

Top Stat: ESPN Radio's Kevin Winter shares that Miami (OH) RB Kevin Davis' 3rd Qtr TD is only his 2nd rushing TD this season.

Top Stat: ESPN Radio's Kevin Winters shared that 5 of UAB's 6 losses in the regular season were by 1 score or less (8 points or fewer).

Top Stat: ESPN Radio's Kevin Winter shares that Miami (OH) is 4/5 on 4th Down attempts compared to UAB's 1/3.

Oops Award: Bowl Season Radio's Jamie Seh isn't afraid to admit when she's made a mistake.
"The Roadrunners are lining up in the endzone. Oops! I mean the redzone."

Top stat: Bowl Season Radio's Landry Burdine shares this is the second time this season Troy's D has forced 4 turnovers in 1 game.

Top analysis: Bowl Season Radio's Landry Burdine is a fan of old school football,
"I love that UTSA lined up directly under Center. Direct snaps when a QB is 3-5 yards back often result in a QB being stuffed and lead to 3rd and 4th Down failures."

Top reporting: Bowl Season Radio's Despina Barton reported that Troy coach Jon Sumrall  gathered his team together after scoring a go ahead TD to remind them that their mentality should always be remain gritty and don't be afraid to win ugly.

Top Stat: Bowl Season Radio's Jamie Seh shared that Troy's Cure Bowl win is their 5th straight bowl win. Troy is now 6-3 in bowl games.

Top Stat: Bowl Season Radio's John Denton shares that Cincinnati is 3-0 when Charles McClelland rushes over 100 yards.

Top Stat: ESPN Radio's Anish Shroff shares that statistically speaking the Celebration Bowl features Polar Opposites: the nation's best 3rd Down conversion team (NC Central) against the nation's best 3rd Down Defense (Jackson State).

Best line: ESPN’s Mark Herzlich, after Cincinnati intercepts a pass thrown by Louisville WR Braden Smith in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl, “It's not a trick play anymore when you've done it four times in a game."

Top observation: CBS Sports Spero Dedes noting that Gonzaga has had one of the most brutally tough non-conference schedules this season.

Best line: CBS Sports Spero Dedes telling viewers, You will not see two big time performances in College Basketball from what we’ve seen from Timme right in front of his parents and Anthony Miller.”

Top analysis: Bowl Season Radio's Cole Cubelic says the long fade completion to start the game forced Rice's D to switch from man-to-man to the zone and in turn could allow big plays on both sides of the ball for Southern Miss.

Top Stat: Bowl Season Radio's Mike Grace shared that Rice had the most turnovers out of all bowl teams during the regular season at 30. Cole Cubelic followed up that only 2 FBS teams had more turnovers than Rice in the FBS in 2022.

Top Point: Bowl Season Radio's Mike Grace points out that Southern Miss was ranked 11th in the Sun Belt in red zone scoring efficiency, but much of that was caused by having 3 different QB's start this season.

Top Analysis: Bowl Season Radio Cole Cubelic said a red zone scoring stop is as good as a 2-for-1 score inside two minutes on defense when you trail because it can keep a team from being up by 3 scores & allow you to cut it to 1 score when you get the ball to begin the second half

Top Analysis: Bowl Season Radio's Cole Cubelic said the most ridiculous play in football is a false start on the Center because the Center is in control of when the play starts. Your primary job is to start the play, not start then stop.

Oops Award: ESPN Graphic Department Friday showed Troy playing the United States Tennis Association (USTA). They played University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA).

Top Analysis: ESPN Radio's Dave Steckel says that while you normally should play for guaranteed points, when you're inside the opponents 1 and have a big, strong offensive line you should always go for the Touchdown.

Funniest comment: ESPN Radio's Dave Steckel said, "If you evaluate SMU's defensive tackling solely based off of film, you'd think they were The Grinch because they stink, stank, stunk. This means they're a surprise for being good in the first half."

Top Analysis: ESPN Radio's Dave Steckel really likes when teams change things up. "I'm really liking what Aaron Roderick's doing. In the first quarter he was all ground and pound and up tempo, but here in the second he's letting Maiava-Peters sling things out."

Top Point: ESPN Radio's Jay Alter points out that Maiava-Peters has appeared on national tv before. In 2019 Alter called a high school game on ESPN between Maiava-Peters and Alabama Heisman Winning QB Bryce Young.

Funniest comment: ESPN Radio's Dave Steckel. "(Maiava-Peters) is an elusive runner. We may have to change his last name to Houdini."

Top Stat: ESPN Radio's Dave Steckel says that 92% of the time when the defense scores a touchdown, that team wins the game.

Top Stat: Bowl Season Radio's Brian Estridge shares that Boise State had the #11 defense in the FBS coming into the Frisco Bowl.

Top Reporting: Bowl Season Radio's Chris Mycoskie shares that instead of having a typical turnover chain, Boise State has a turnover spear that has a skull on it that gets adjusted with every turnover.

NFL
Best stat: NFL Network’s Noah Eagle noting that Colts QB Matt Ryan is 3 completions away from his 13th straight season of having 300 completions or more.

Best moment: Pro Football Weekly’s Hub Arkush surprising viewers and showing up on the “The Way We Hear It” segment and thanked all those that that kept him in his thoughts after his medical emergency. Arkush also thanked his family and friends. Arkush thanked the PFW crew.

NFL Network needs to have Noah Eagle & Nate Burleson paired together in next years late season games. The chemistry between the two is remarkable. Eagle has set up Burleson perfectly as well as giving Burleson latitude to excel.
Unfortunately, Eagle is at Fox &  Burleson at CBS.

Kevin Kugler is showcasing that he is one of the best play by play broadcasters in the business tonight. He’s making the NFL proud tonight.

Good Movie Reference: NFL Network’s Mark Sanchez, as the Dolphins/Bills we’re starting to play, “If the Bills start scoring touchdowns it’s turns Otis Day and the Knights. This thing could turn into Animal House real fast. They will singing be “Shout” at the top of their lungs.”

Funniest exchange: NFLN Mark Sanchez discussing a replay w/Mike Pereira “So, will they say stands rather than confirmed?  Pereira says, Well, there is no such thing as stands in the NFL. It’s either the call stands or reversed. Sanchez retorts, “I was asking for a friend.”

Clever line: NFL Network’s Rich Eisen, after Browns WR Peoples-Jones TD catch, “A Michigan man delighting the Ohio football fans.”
Eisen is a grad of Michigan.

Best production: Production team getting a clean crisp shot of Bills QB Josh Allen getting the ball in the end zone on a 2-point conversion to tie the game at 29-29.

Worst Call: NFL Network going to commercial when it was clear there would be review of Josh Allen 2 pt attempt that would tie up the game in the 4th qtr.

NFL Network’s hiring of Emmanuel Sanders is proving to be worth the spend. He has done a stellar job at each of his on-air opportunities. Sanders will sooner than later will be a fixture sitting in a studio analyst chair.

Top nugget: CBS Sports Ian Eagle telling viewers that Jet fan had no reaction when QB Zach Wilson entered the game. Eagle noted fans were probably worried of the team being pinned back after a punt.

Clever production: CBS Sports, as the 1-11-1 Texans scored a touchdown on the 10-3 Chiefs to take a 7-0 lead playing  Daryl Hall & John Oates song “You Make My Dreams (Come True) going to commercial break.

Understatement Award: CBS Sports Adam Archuleta,” It's hard to believe any team here in the NFC South will win their last four games."

Top Analysis: Fox Sports Greg Olsen points out that Jacksonville's biggest weakness all season has been slow starts, but while you can occasionally do so without consequences a slow start against a team like Dallas in almost impossible to come back from.

Best Timing Award: Fox Sports Greg Olsen points out that after falling behind 14-0 Jacksonville has been able to drive against Dallas by using some misdirection on every snap. Next snap was a TD to cut the lead to 14-7.

Top reporting: CBS Sports Evan Washburn telling viewers that Zach Wilson reached out to Hall of Fame QB’s Steve Young, Kurt Warner, Drew Brees that have been benched in their careers to get their thoughts on how to get back on track.

Top Stat: Fox Sports Kevin Burkhardt shares that the last time Dallas made the Super Bowl was the same year the Jacksonville Jaguars began NFL play: 1995.

Top information: With 3:17 left in the 3rd quarter and Pittsburgh coming off a TD drive that took 11:43 off the clock, Greg Gumbel tells CBS viewers Carolina's total time of possession is only 12:30.

CBS Sports Tony Romo continues to shy away in key situations and defer to Jim Nantz. He has a tendency to ask Jim Nantz, “What would you do here?,” “Jim, they have to go for it here, right?”
