AUGUST 29- SEPTEMBER 1 EDITION

Top analysis: BTN's Matt Millen shares the worst thing you want to do in the 1st Half is take 2 TO's w/ the punt team all the field because you're providing your opponent extra time to get coverage ready on a stopped clock.

Top stat: BTN's Jason Horowitz shared that Rutgers DJ Djabome had only 15 tackles off the bench in 2023. However he has 7 tackles in the first 21 minutes of play in 2024.

Top analysis: BTN's Matt Millen shares the key to drive the ball on short distances is be down low. The lower center of gravity allows your legs to generate more strength while making it harder to bring you down.

Top analysis: BTN's Matt Millen shares one reason for using a QB with rush capabilities in the endzone is it allows you to still run a hurry up with multiple runners, meaning the D can't target one man.

Top analysis: BTN's Jason Horowitz shares a cardinal sin is not paying attention to your field position on special teams. It's better to let the ball bounce once & go inside 20 for a touchback to the 25 than to catch a fair catch at the 21 since it's a +4 yrd gained w/no time off

Top analysis: ESPN's Jay Alter shares one reason for taking the ball first with a young team is you want to get the jitters out early and allow your team to establish chemistry.

Top analysis: ESPN's Rocky Boiman shares one reason for establishing depth if when you have early season heat, no matter how much conditioning you've done cramps will occur. Depth allows you to always have a next man up ready.

Dreaded Glitch Award: On a 2nd and Goal the feed on UAPB/Arkansas cut off for about 10-15 seconds. When it came back there was no audio, and the scoreboard was rolling up, meaning a TD had just been missed.

Top analysis: ESPN's Roddy Jones shares one reason for nearly running out the timeclock on your opening series is it applies more metal opposition earlier and causes them to make more mistakes easier.

Say what?: ESPN’s Mark Jones after Colorado completes a screen pass for a "Nice gain of 1 yard” on 1st play from scrimmage.

Strongest comment: ESPN’s Roddy Jones after Colorado's Travis Hunter outraces a NDSU defender to the end zone for a TD, “That's the difference between FCS ball and FBS ball you can take that angle at the FCS level. At the FBS level, it ends up with him in the end zone."

Best line: ESPN’s Roddy Jones, after Colorado falls behind North Dakota State 17-14. “When you haven't played a game and you've got 42 transfers, you don't exactly know how these guys are gonna respond."

Top reporting: truTV's Jared Greenberg shared Ken Niumatalolo's year sabbatical was solely so he could learn how to modernize football because he knew the option attack wouldn't work at other universities.

Top info: truTV's Ari Wolfe shares that the SOS is one of the determining factors when determining the best G5 Champion, so you need to root for all your conference opposition in non-conference play since they raise your chances of being the best G5 Champion who makes it.

Top rules analysis: truTV's pxp broadcaster Ari Wolfe telling viewers when it comes to players being DQ'd, you need to listen closely to the wording. If you're DQ'd, you can remain on the sideline. If you're ejected, you must go to the locker room.

Top analysis: truTV's Darius Walker shares the best way to stop a rush attack in to bring everyone to the line and do a run blitz. It could lead to open receivers, but usually it results in 0 or negative yards because there's no time to adjust.

Funniest line: ESPN’s Roddy Jones after Colorado pass bounces off North Dakota State CB Anthony Chideme-Alfaro's leg and results in an interception in the end zone “The left calf of Anthony Chideme-Alfaro may be the MVP of that drive!"

Sarcasm Award: Bally Sports South Brandon Gaudin as Phillies fans booed Braves’ Marcell Ozuna, Philly fan favorite Marcell Ozuna steps in the batter's box.

Dreaded Glitch Award: Audio problems on initial sideline report from Paul Carcaterra for Temple/Oklahoma on ESPN.

Best stat: ESPN’s Andre Ware telling viewers that Temple only has 45% of its team has returned from last year.

Best stat: Fox Sports Tim Brando telling viewers that Hayden Wolff (WKU QB) is with his 7th OC. Tyler Van Dyke (Wisconsin QB) with his 4 OC. Brando notes 43 of the 68 projected starting QB of the 4 Power Conferences are transfers that’s 63% of those 43 are first year transfers.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Devin Gardner telling viewers the reason you need to convert 3rd and short when you're  a non-P4 school is you never know how long it'll be between possessions. Most P4 teams tend to wear you out if you don't convert the short distances.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Tim Brando noting the reason you spread the formation in the redzone is to cause confusion on the D side and make them have to guess where you're going. It doesn't tend to be successful though when you line up dead center.

Funniest line: Fox Sports Tim Brando, on the new 2 minute timeout at the end of each half, “It’s not a warning. We don’t warn in college. It delivers a negative connotation. We just take it and call it a timeout. Not go to the corner, just a timeout.”

Top analysis: Fox Sports Devin Gardner shares the method to stopping a run game is force them to run side to side. Wisconsin is using 9 men and powering straight up the center forcing Western Michigan to keep giving up large runs.

Best Timing Award: Fox Sports Devin Gardner telling viewers to look for Wisconsin WR Tech Kekahuna on a 3rd Down play. Next play was a reception by Kekahuna.

Top stat: ESPN's Stormy Buonantony shares that Stanford is expected to be improved in 2024 because in 2023 they were in the 95% for returning productivity. For 2024 though they are in the top 5% of the nation.

Top analysis: ESPN's Brock Osweiler on the #1 way to get benched early is to go into a game too aggressively. You may be excited that you get to hit someone other than your own team, but you can't afford 3- 15 yard penalties on opening series. You must play sound &  disciplined.

Best line: Fox Sports Tim Brando, after wide open WKU WR Malique Dieudonne catches a pass deep downfield, “All the Diedonne day and night!”

Top observation: Fox Sports Tim Brando, noting the play of the Wisconsin’s offensive, “They’ve stretched the field somewhat the width of the field but not necessarily the depth of it. They have not looked for anything in the seems or vertically.”

Funniest moment: Fox Sports Tim Brando and Devin Gardner doing their famous, “Jump Around” rendition in the booth. Brando’s self deprecating humor makes him honest and one of the best broadcasters around.

Top production: Fox Sports playing Kenny Rogers, “The Gambler,” going into commercial break as WMU went for it in 4th and 1. They weren’t successful.

Best graphic: Fox Sports Wisconsin Mount Rushmore graphic comparing Tim Brando and Devin Gardner’s selections. Both had Barry Alvarez, Joe Thomas, and Ron Dayne. Only difference between the two is Brando had Alan Ameche. and Gardner had J.J. Watt.

Class act: Fox Sports Tim Brando always gives credit for all the people behind the scenes. Brando mentions the team in the truck, producer, director, spotter and entire Fox Family that works games. Unfortunately, you seldom hear this from broadcasters.

Best feature: ESPN’s College Gameday on Oregon now Miami TE Cam McCormick, who enters his unprecedented 9th season. McCormick endured tremendous amount of injuries but was determined to rehab and continue. One of the best features in many years.

Best like: ESPN's Roy Philpott, on new Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia, who has the Commodores up 3-0 early and has led them deep in Virginia Tech territory again: "He's doing his best Johnny Football impression so far."

Strongest comment: ESPN's Roy Philpott, after Quincy Skinner's high-point catch in tight coverage gives Vanderbilt a 10-0 lead over Virginia Tech: "You may not see a better touchdown grab in the early window today than that one."

Top analysis: Fox Sports Mark Helfrich shares most QB's that change rosters don't change because of NIL. Instead they're looking for the system most compatible for them because that'll give them their best chance to help their team win.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Connor Onion shares inside 2 minutes a lot of the plays not run are because a team is intentionally trying to run out the clock because they feel they'll have more success going the other way.

Top nugget: ESPN’s Sean McDonough telling viewers that former Georgia kicker, Kevin Butler, was the first kicker to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Funniest exchange: Fox Sports
Connor Onion: "What's the first thing you get when you come to Maryland."
Mark Helfrich: "It has to be the crabcakes. They're so good. In fact I got you one with special ingredients, but it was difficult finding one where they added onions first.”

Top interview: Disappointed Virginia Tech Coach Brent Fry, down 17-3 to Vanderbilt at  halftime, tells ESPN sideline reporter Taylor Davis: "This isn't the team I saw at practice."

Top stat: ABC's Sean McDonough shares that Clemson's O was ranked in the top 15 when comparing between the 20's. However inside the redzone they dropped tremendously to 118th.

Funniest comment: ABC's Sean McDonough,  "Coming up next on ACC Network..... wait, that first one says Noon. I'm confused. Wouldn't that be underway? Oh, this says next week. Got it. It's Week 1 for everyone. Easy to make mistakes."

Top analysis: CW's Ryan Leaf shares that smaller power conference schools don't have as many athletes leave because the athletes attending aren't chasing after the university names brand. They're attending out of love.

Best move: ESPN having sideline reporter, Katie George, use an SEC on ABC microphone to differentiate the game from the generic ESPN microphone.

Best flashback: CBS Sports showing a clip of Brad Nessler and Gary Danielson’s first game together from 32 years ago. ESPN’S Kirk Herbstreit was in action.

Best line: ESPN's Richard Cross, "Jake Retzlaff making it rain. The deep ball across the post, and it's 14-0."

Top analysis: ESPN's Barrett Brooks shared the key success to defensive pressure is you apply it on two fronts. You put pressure up front to create holes and allow the backfield to swoop in and force losses.

Sarcasm Award: ABC’s Kirk Herbstreit, calling the game in College Station, TX: "I love the heat and humidity in a suit!"

Worst Timing Award: ESPN's Richard Cross, "Will Ferrin coming in for a 34 yard field goal. He was 11/14 a year ago. Should be an easy make. Kick is away, and he can't get it through. That's the first Southern Illinois win tonight. "

Cliche Award: ESPN’s Lowell Galindo referring to a member of the Auburn Marching Band, “He’s got his game face on.”

Best New info: ESPN’s Lowell Galindo explaining to viewers if a game is out of control, then the 2nd half goes to 10 minute quarters. The rule took effect in the Auburn/Alabama A&M with Auburn leading 45-3 at the half.

Top information: SEC Network's Tom Hart shares when a weather delay occurs and you stick it out, you're doing so to have an experience you'll never forget. Often you won't remember the score, but you'll always remember who you were with and what you were doing.

Top analysis: SEC Network's Jordan Rodgers shares most tackles for loss occur because a receiver has failed to get open and forced the QB to go to the 4th or 5th option.

Top information: SEC Network's Tom Hart shares that communication devices have forced Kentucky to adjust and add roughly 15-20 plays per game because it's increased most teams offensive paces.

Funniest exchange: SEC Network 's Dari Nowkah asked Chris Doering for 1 word to describe the 1st Half. Doering answered "Exciting."
Immediately after Nowkah quipped, "That's it. Only a 10 minute Halftime. Back to the commercials."

Top info: ESPN's Rod Gilmore shared that Arizona fans who have approached him in the hotel are optimistic after 10 wins in 2023, but they're also remembering how badly 2015 went when they began the season ranked and ended 6-6.

Best timing Award: Fox Sports Chris Myers said ASU WR Matayer entered the game as the most watched WR at ASU because of his potential, but he hadn't done anything in the 1st half moments before Matayer caught a pass, run, and score 20 yd TD in the 3rd.

Top analysis: CW's Max Browne shares the best way to overcome turnovers is stay true to yourself and stick with your gameplan. Adjusting it too fast typically leads to more hurried miscues.

Top analysis: CW's Thom Brennaman shares the key needed to shock the world is to cause a few lucky breaks, typically in the form of turnovers, because it means your opponent is defeating themselves.

Hustle Award: ESPN’s Holly Rowe, who was on the sidelines for Notre Dame/Texas A&M, will be on the sidelines for LSU/USC.

Hustle Award: ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit, who was on the call for Notre Dame/Texas A&M, will be on the call for LSU/USC.

Best line: ESPN’s Rece Davis, on a spectacular catch by USC WR Kyron Hudson, “I know Odell Beckam played for LSU but that was OBJS.”

Top analysis: ABC's Kirk Herbstreit pointed out that a good tackle doesn't let up on their initial block if a running lane is to open up. If they do so, then it'll leave an opener defender to shut down the scoring drive.

Top explanation: ABC's Bill LeMonnier shared that the illegal defensive procedure call has expanded to anyone within a yard of the line of scrimmage. Last year a LB could stand a yard back and issue distracting signals, but this year that is considered an illegal procedure.

Top analysis: ABC's Kirk Herbstreit shares the key to any game success is creating match-ups. It can be at any possession (TE, RB, WR, CB), but a match-up advantage forces game adjustments that open up other players as the game advances.

Cliche Award: ABC’s Kevin Negandhi asking Booger McFarland, what he learned from the Alabama win, McFarland gives, “Kalen DeBoer
Is going to let Jalen Milroe be Jalen Milroe. In an exclusive nationally aired game that type of analysis is horrendous.

Hustle Award: ESPN’s Chris Fowler, who was on the call for Notre Dame/Texas A&M, called US Open matches on Sunday.

Funniest exchange: ABC's Rece Davis, "That was the backfield official throwing the flag. It went 20 yards."
Kirk, "He's trying to show off his strength. Maybe going out for distance events."
After no foul was called, Rece quipped, "He needed to warm up his rotator cuff."

Top reporting: ABC's Holly Rowe shares that even though it's a neutral site, the fact that USC is driving into the LSU band section in the fourth is causing them to have more noise interference and making it sound like a game in Baton Rouge.

Top stat: ABC's Rece Davis shares LSU hasn't won a neutral site opening game since 2019. Meanwhile Lincoln Riley (USC) is 1-2 after losing neutral site matches each of the last 2 years.

Top analysis: ESPN's Charles Arbuckle shares that most new QB's on rosters aren't meant to be a criticism to who is there. Instead they're brought in to provide stability and multiple options.

Top analysis: ESPN's Charles Arbuckle shares it isn't contact that leads to PI calls. Instead it is keeping your hands on the individual to make sure a delay occurs that is PI. Contact by itself is just part of the game.

Top analysis: ESPN's Charles Arbuckle shares that when you give up a free play, a cardinal sin is to not play through. By not playing through you give up a big play rather than 5 yards for offsides.

Top analysis: ESPN's Justin Kutcher shares the first thing D linemen are taught is if you can't get to the QB, get your hands up in the air. Doing so usually leads to batdowns and incompletions.

Funniest line: After Justin Kutcher promoted the USC/LSU game, Charles Arbuckle quipped, "It's crazy thinking of USC in the Big Ten. It makes me a Big Ten legend baby!"
Obviously Buck was referring to UCLA also being in the Big Ten, but he mentioned it during a USC promo. If you didn't know he played at USC, it'd definitely cause some confusion.

Top analysis: ESPN's Charles Arbuckle shares when your a QB you know 1 man will be unaccounted for. It's why you need to have a quick release, and it usually results in scores.

Top analysis: ESPN's Charles Arbuckle shares what makes a rush attack successful is that the line provides an initial block, but it's the receivers and QB providing blocks down the field that lead to big gains.

Funniest exchange: ESPN's Justin Kutcher, "In the first half we had tons of turnovers."
Charles Arbuckle then quipped, "Apple, cherry, peach, and a couple of miscellaneous. You name it, we had it."

Top reporting: ESPN's Taylor McGregor shares that in the spirit of equal fairness, if one teams communication equipment isn't working, neither team can use it. As a result teams must still learn signals because you never know when they'll be needed.

Top analysis: ESPN's Dusty Dvoracek shares that intermediate passes have a disadvantage against most SEC teams, because if they bring out a speed rush D, their advantage in speed typically leads to big hits and losses.

Top stat: ESPN's Dave Pasch shares that Alabama HC Kalen DeBoer only has 12 losses in 5 seasons as a head coach. Doing it at both Fresno State and Washington is what made him Alabama's #1 choice.

Top analysis: ESPN's Dusty Dvoracek shares that what makes most P5 defenses so dangerous is when they aren't blitzing into the backfield, they have 1 man specifically tasked with watching the QB's eyes. Doing so usually results in more interceptions and changes the games tide.

Top reporting: ESPN's Taylor McGregor shares that the reason most P5 schools start with lower talent competition is because they feel they have lots of talent, but they still need time and games to gel the units together.

Top insight: ESPN's Dave Pasch shared that when they asked players the difference between Nick Sabin and Kalen DeBoer, the overwhelming answer was DeBoer is a little looser and lets them have a little more fun.

Top information: ESPN's Dave Pasch did an excellent job explaining the difference between offensive and defensive holding penalties. Offensive holding is 10 yards from the spot of the foul, but defensive holding is added to the end of the play.

Hustle Award: ESPN’s Nick Saban will be on Saturday’s College Gameday from Ann Arbor then fly to Tuscaloosa to watch USF/Alabama. Saban’s name will be honored at the game as the stadium will now be renamed Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Best move: As announced on The Teardown Podcast, TNT Sports has snagged the talented Shannon Spake. Thursday she made her debut on Inside NASCAR: The Playoffs." The show will air Thursday's on truTV. Jordan Bianchi, Mamba Smith, & Steve Letarte will round out the show.

It’s the Eagles first game without Kelce since October of 2014.

Top analysis: ESPN's Andre Ware shared what makes 2 experienced TE's dangerous is even when the second TE isn't part of a planned passing play, they recognize when their QB needs an extra receiver and can immediately head to that spot for a big play.

Top interview: ESPN's Paul Carcaterra asked BYU's Kalani Sitake why the defense was struggling after the QB change. Kalani admitted that while BYU planned for 2 QB's, it was an inability to duplicate the QB's cuts and speed that led to poor tackling and sustained drives.

Top analysis: ESPN's Andre Ware shared that a pocket passer has a disadvantage against pressure D because all their linemen are occupied and can't stop a speedy back when they come around the end, typically leading to a sack.

Funniest line: Peacock’s Noah Eagle, after both teams were penalized with too many players on the field. Noah quips, I don’t know the last time I’ve seen 12 against 12.”

Top analysis: ESPN's Andre Ware shares as a QB shotgun can be a disadvantage because you see all the backfield movement. This distraction leads to more fumbles and usually costs you points.

Best pop culture reference: ESPN's Anish Shroff. "I wonder if SMU Kicker Collin Rogers was watching Mr. Rogers Neighborhood before this game. This neighborhood seems to be his place with FG's if 52, 53, and 38 made."

Best line: Peacock’s Noah Eagle, after Eagles RB Saquon Barkley scored a touchdown, “It’s official. Barkley is a bird in Brazil.

Top analysis: NBC's Todd Blackledge shares that what draws most offside penalties has nothing to do with a QB's tone. Instead it's fully caused by the voice inflection because they always sound real.

Best stat: Peacock’s Noah Eagle telling viewers that the Eagles are the first team in 3 consecutive seasons to  have 3 different Offensive and Defensive Coordinators under the same Head Coach.

Top observation: Peacock’s Todd Blackledge noting that Packers Defense isn’t allowing Eagles QB Jalen Hurts to get to the edge.

Top information: Fox Sports Connor Onion tells viewers Northwestern quarterback Mike Wright set the 200-meter dash record at Vanderbilt, his 1st collegiate stop.

Refreshing Award: NBC/Peacock’s rules analyst, Terry McAulay, for the second straight night baffled by the officials ruling on roughing penalties. McAulay is calling them as he sees them and not a parrot for the league.

Worst Timing Award: ESPN's Andre Ware predicted that BYU was going to get a delay of game, not run a play, and punt on 4th and 1. Instead they did a pass to Miles Davis for the 1st Down.

Say what?: Peacock's Todd Blackledge said even if the Eagles didn't score, their job was accomplished because GB was going to have to drive the field for a chance to win. However it was a 2nd & Goal. They hadn't failed to score. They still had 3 more plays to do so & added a FG.

Top analysis: ABC’s Dusty Dvoracek telling viewers that you have to have good rush lanes and integrity on Arkansas QB Taylen Green.

Strongest comment: ABC’s Dusty Dvoracek noting that viewers know how great Arkansas QB has been throughout his career at Boise State but this is the best version of him. Dvoracek contributed the improvement to Arkansas OC Bobby Petrino.

Top nugget: ABC’s Dave Pasch telling viewers that Arkansas DC Travis Williams played under Bobby Petrino in Atlanta.

Best exchange: ESPN Roy Philpott & Sam Acho after missed Cincy FG Philpott: "As a HS kicker, I still have nightmares abt kicking w/laces square on. “Acho: "Were you really a HS kicker? What was your %?”
Philpott: "It wasn't great, but did make 1 from 44 yrds.”Acho, Ooh, go ahead”

Top Analysis: ABC’s Dusty Dvoracek telling viewers on defense the ability to bring a safety down into the box and trust your corners outside is a must.

Top stat: ABC’s Dave Pasch noting that the first offensive play of the 3rd Quarter was only their 11th play of the game since mid 1st Quarter.

Top insight: ABC’s Dave Pasch noting teams in Big 12 and ACC won’t get as many at large bids as Big 10 and SEC that the interconference game are important.

Strongest comment: BTN’s Matt Millen on Penn State tight end Tyler Warren: "He looks like a taller John Riggins."

Top stat: ABC’s Dave Pasch telling viewers the average age of Oklahoma State’s is 24 and the 5 have a combined 215 combined starts.

Best Timing Award: ABC’s  Dusty Dvoracek telling viewers to watch out for Oklahoma State’s Brennan Presley. Next play, Presley scored a touchdown.

Top insight: ESPN’s Sam Acho after Cincinnati defense is called for a delay of game penalty, keeping a Pitt drive alive: "It's for having an abrupt movement to try to get the offense to move -- point of emphasis being emphasized."

Strongest comment: ABC’s Sean McDonough, with Gamecocks leading 10-3 late on the 1st half and giving the ball away on an interception: "The reality is both offenses have been poor."

Top analysis: ABC's Sean McDonough shares that when both teams offenses struggle, it is whichever commits fewer mistakes that wins. He then expounded that mistakes aren't just turnovers. It also refers to penalties, missed blocks, open receivers, and other flawed fundamentals.

Worst Timing Award: Kentucky HC Mark Stoops told ABC's Molly McGrath that they need to cut down on self-inflicted wounds. The next play made things worse as UK threw a pic six.

Top information: Fox Sports Devin Gardner shares that Texas Tech's D scheme to stop Washington State's pass is to drop 8. It leaves more open run lanes, but it also forces forced accurate throws which lead to more turnovers.

Top stat: Fox Sports Tim Brando shares Washington State's pass offense only averages 2.6 seconds per pass play because of the tempo run.

Best pop-cultute reference: Fox Sports
Devin Gardner: "That was a little wuhp-wuhp."
Tim then quipped, "What was that? I did see a few roadrunners and coyotes on the drive to Pullman the other day" as the sound was similar to the Coyote assembling weapons in Looney Tunes.

Top information: Fox Sports Devin shares that slant passes behind the line do allow blocks behind the line to occur. However they don't allow holding.

Top information: Fox Sports Devin Gardner shares Washington State's quick tempo passes are successful most plays because they create 3 vs. 1 options, leaving 1 receiver open at all times.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Devin Gardner shares a disadvantage to the quick tempo pass us your QB is usually throwing before receivers ever get in position, leading to more incompletions than dropback QB's.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Tim Brando shares that the #1 reason broadcasters will make errors in the booth is they use the eye test on the player and forget to check and see where the ball is at.

Top rules explanation: Fox Sports Dean Blandino shares illegal blocks are determined mostly based off of where the pass is caught. When the ball is caught at the line of scrimmage the linemen are allowed to block up the field legally, but if the ball is beyond the line of scrimmage it makes them out of position and illegally downfield.

Top analysis: CBS Sports Jason McCourty shares the way to overcome a cover 2 D is to run 2 receivers across the same area either causing the defenders to split up or leave a receiver open.

Salty Award?: Greg Olsen - If you're going to call an NFL broadcast, you need to make sure your microphone works. For any aspiring broadcasters out there this is the best point of the point. I gave such a great nugget to this Steelers offense.
