News and Notes and Broadcast Assignments by Rudy Martzke (Oct 3-6)

Top Analysis: ESPN's Aaron Murray shares that when you have a slow start, the key to rebound is change your goals. Make new weekly goals instead of aiming at the full season goal. Also work on developing your fundamentals.

Best Timing Award: ESPN's Aaron Murray shared the reason Troy's offense has struggled has been because of an inability to protect the QB. It has resulted in losses and injuries. The next play saw Troy's offensive line collapse, leading to a 15 yd sack.

Top reporting: ESPN's Dave Neal shared that in 2023 Texas State ran a play every 23 seconds. In 2024 it has slowed down to around the 30 second mark.

Top Analysis: ESPN's Aaron Murray shares the disadvantage to keeping a receiver in front of you is it leads to softer coverage. The softer coverage leads to a higher passing percentage.

Top Reporting: CBS' Alex Del Barrio shared programs that have moved from FCS to FBS are finding success earlier because they're able to go out and find FBS level players with the transfer portal. Programs include Texas St, Jacksonville St, Liberty, James Madison, and others.

Top analysis: CBS' Taylor McHargue shares UTEP considers a 3 and out to be a turnover because you're giving your opponent favorable field position while failing to advance yourself.

Funniest line: CBS' Alex del Barrio, "UTEP's defense could be called the orange crush when they get into the backfield. The uniforms look exactly like Orange Crush soda, and they're crushing the Sam Houston line."

Top statement: Amazon's Al Michaels, "Fantasy Football players hate when a QB throws a backwards pass because it counts as a run. The yardage gained gives them nothing."

Funniest line: Amazon's Al Michaels, "That scoreboard view is a mile high here in Atlanta. Coaches might need neck surgery if they look too long."

Top analysis: Amazon's Al Michaels, "Early close games leave a team asking themselves What If. Atlanta's games have all been close, but after tonight they'll find themselves tied for the lead or 2 back."

Top analysis: Amazon's Kirk Herbstreit shared that veteran QB's that start the season as backups typically take 2-3 games to get their timing back, but once they do so passing percentage average drastically improves for the team overall.

Prime’s Kaley Hartung once again does an excellent job of interviewing 2 of the Falcons WR’s that helped them win in OT. Hartung was also on top of the secondary injuries for the Buccaneers.

Top analysis: ESPN's Andre Ware shares the key to beating a quick tempo team is to keep them on the sidelines as long as possible because it causes their muscles to get cool, causing them to naturally slow down and occasionally commit turnovers.

Top analysis: ESPN's Andre Ware shares the way to contain a young QB is to make sure they commit the mistake of zoning in on one target. It makes them easier to cover and leads to more stops.

Top stat: Gridiron Radio's Eli Gold shares that UNLV is 4-0 for only the fourth time ever and the first time since 1976.

Top information: Gridiron Radio's Eli Gold shares that even though the Raiders play on grass, then field used by UNLV is turf. The stadium is designed to specifically role in a designed grass field for Raiders games.

Top analysis: Gridiron Radio's Jared Petrino shares a key to make the defense slightly faster is to have offensive success. It lessens the defensive pressure and makes them want to be more aggressive so you can get the ball back sooner.

Top stat: Fox Sports Trent Rush shares that UNLV was ranked for the 1st time ever as a FBS program entering their game against Syracuse.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Petros Papadakis shares that when a team has a QB change during the season, WR's oftentimes may trust them, but it takes time to develop the passing chemistry. The first couple of games see a lot of incompletions as a result.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Petros Papadakis shares that most coaches build trust in their team with early discipline. It leads to fewer penalty calls and helps the players know their coaches want them to succeed.

Top rules explanation: Fox Sports Mike Pereira shares that CFB & the NFL have an intent to deceive rule. It occurs whenever a WR acts like they're running off the field and stops at the sidelines, making the D think they're going off the field. It's an automatic unsportsmanlike.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Petros Papadakis noted teams that rely heavily on pass usually have an Achilles in run game. Their run games typically produce 2 yds or less Increasing run total to 3-4 yds per carry is needed to balancing your attack & opening your offense.

Best line: ABC’s Joe Tessitore, after a punt that went off at the 1/2,yard line that bounced away from endzone, “As if he has a joystick controller in his hand and went hard left!”

Top Reporting: ESPN's Taylor McGregor shared that in an effort to eliminate holding calls, Ole Miss practiced with tennis balls taped to their hands. This method was introduced by the NYG in 2020.

Top stat: Fox Sports Tim Brando shares last time Iowa State started 5-0 was 1980. That season Iowa State finished 6-5 after a 5 game losing streak was ended by a season ending win over Oklahoma St.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Tim Brando shares that most of Baylor's struggles have occurred because they've been unable to find a run game. This has given opponents the ball more often and allowed their defense to be tired out.

Oops Award: Fox's Tim Brando, "Up next we've got a fun one- TX Tech/Arizona. I hope they get to stay at The Overton, some of the finest dining in Lubbock. Wait, it's at Tucson. I'm sure Tucson has some good stuff, but they don't equal The Overton."

Funniest line: Fox Sports Connor Onion, "We spent so much time focusing on Tech's and Arizona’s offenses that we ended up getting the one thing we never expected to start the game: simultaneous series punts. "

Top statement: ESPN's Dave Pasch, "Alabama's Kalen DeBoer set up rat traps around the facility this week to remind his team don't fall for the rat poison a week after a big win. Vanderbilt though hasn't been known for their prowess."

Top analysis: ESPN's Dusty Dvoracek shared that it is the game inside the lines that determines if you can convert a 4th Down. If the line cracks and breaks it often results in a stop and turnover.

Top stat: ESPN's Dave Pasch shared that a 1/10 3rd Down conversion rate was the primary reason Ole Miss lost to Kentucky. They weren't able to consistently remain on the field.

ESPN's Taylor McGregor isn't afraid to ask tough questions. Instead of asking questions like what would you like to improve on, she's very bold and asks a question where there's no generic answer, "What would you have done differently to make it where you weren't in this deficit?"

Top analysis: Fox Sports Devin Gardner shares that the reason most holding calls occur on the offensive line is because a QB gets out of the pocket.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Devin Gardner shared one item that determines a PI is impeding the receivers route. However when the receiver initiates the joust, it is solely them who impedes themselves because both have equal access to the ball.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Devin Gardner shares that most QB breakouts occur because defenders try to block the run lanes and move too far up the field. It allows the QB time to scramble through the position the defenders were supposed to be in.

Stat of the day: ESPN's Kevin Neghandi, "Army and Navy have started 5-0 in the same season for the first time since 1945."

Top comment: Tom Hart on SEC Network as Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia led the Commodores down the field vs. Alabama: "You may roll your eyes if you hear the Johnny Manziel comparison, but he looks like No. 2 wearing No. 2 sometimes."

Top stat: Tom Hart on SEC Network as 1st quarter ends with Vanderbilt leading Alabama 13-7: "Last time Vandy led at the end of the 1st quarter against a No. 1 team was 1977 against Oklahoma."

Top exchange: With Vanderbilt leading Alabama 33-28 in the 4th quarter, Tom Hart asked Cole Cubelic, "What should the stress level be for Alabama fans at this moment?"
Cubelic: "I would not be comfortable in my recliner if I was watching this football game hoping for an Alabama win."
Hart: "Oh, they got out of the recliners a long time ago."

Funniest comment: ESPN's Tom Hart, after Vanderbilt Coach Clark Lea raced down the sideline to call a timeout vs. Alabama: "Clark Lea was a fullback in his playing days. He looked like a flanker sprinting down the sideline to get that timeout called right before the snap occurred."

Top reporting: NFLN's Stacy Dales shares that even though the Jets drafted Sam Darnold, he isn't considering this a revenge game. He washed his Jets experiences from his memory when he gained the trust to be starter at Minnesota.

Oops Award: NFLN's graphics awarded Minnesota 9 points for the FG, but it was corrected to 3 on the commercial break graphic.

Top analysis: NFLN's Kurt Warner points out that statistically the Vikings have the worst pass D in the NFL, but that passing total is attributed to teams having to pass because the Vikings have trailed less than 4 minutes all season.

Top analysis: NFLN's Kurt Warner points out that most incompletions from Rodgers to Garrett Wilson have occurred because Rodgers realizes Wilson is about to run into pressure coverage, so Rodgers throws it short to intentionally slow Wilson down.

Top analysis: NFLN's Kurt Warner shared that one reason Darnold is having success at Minnesota is because he's not forcing balls into coverage, like he did as a rookie. Instead he's willing to run.

Top stat: NFLN's Kurt Warner shared that Minnesota is only the 4th team in NFL history to start 4-0 w/ 7 or more turnovers. To further emphasize the point, Rich Eisen shared the Vikings just lost their 5th fumble.

Top stat: NFLN's Rich Eisen shared Andrew Van Ginkel has 4 career interceptions, 3 of which have been pic 6's, and 2 of which have occurred in 2024.

Funniest exchange: CBS' Charles Davis, "I see a smile on DeMeco Ryans. I thought he didn't have emotions."
Ian Eagle quipped, "Well it's after a 36 yd return. "
Davis concluded, "So it comes in increments. It must take at least 15 yards to get a smirk."

Top analysis: Fox Sports Greg Olsen shares what makes Jayden Daniels so dangerous is most QB's accuracy fades when passing more than 20 yds. Daniels accuracy remains as good up to 40 yds.

Top analysis: CBS' Greg Olsen said every team needs 3 things to be successful: 1) Good ownership, 2) Good coaching, & 3) Good Fandom. The fandom boosts the teams money allowing them to spend more.

Top call: CBS' Kevin Harlan, "The equal distribution continues. Burrow's up to 283 yards and 4 TD's to 3 different receivers, tying his career high of 4 TD passes in 1 game. Cincinnati's looking unbeatable early in the 4th."

Top analysis: CBS' Trent Green, "Holding in the middle is an easy call to make, especially when it's the cause of getting the ball downfield. It also shows how desperate a team is to come back because they don't stop trying."

Top analysis: Fox's Mark Sanchez shares that the number one reason a team struggles on 3rd Downs is penalties. Not only does it move you back, but it forces you into passing situations that the opponent can defend easier."

Top analysis: Fox's Mark Sanchez shares the number one reason most PI's occur is because the defender lines up against their receiver late and then panics if they start to get by, often leading to defensive holding or pass interference.

Top analysis: Fox's Mark Sanchez points out that there's two different types of blocks: a standard block to protect your QB and a scoring block. Scoring blocks allow big plays to occur and often are rewarded with a TD within 2-3 plays.

Top stat: Fox's Chris Myers shares that Miami had 7 straight run plays after a 3rd Down pass conversion solely to try and bully New England's D into tiring out while they gained the lead.

Top analysis: Fox Sports' Jonathan Vilma shares that even though he doesn't have the explosion as in yester years, TE Marcedes Lewis was brought in because his wisdom and experience is being used to train the younger players on how all staff should be treated and how learning never ends.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Jonathan Vilma shares that an advantage to having a big lead is you are given options on 4th Down. You can choose to take a delay, go for it, or go for the FG without any real consequences, all while forcing your opponent to drive the field.

Top analysis: CBS' Charles Davis points out that in a tight game most young QB's tend to hold onto the ball too long and run out the clock. You always want to get rid of it quick and give your team a chance to win.

Worst Timing Award: CBS's Kevin Harlan shares that Cincinnati kicker McPhearson had made 14 straight FG kicks in OT. However his 53 yard attempt sailed wide left because Rico dropped the ball while trying to place it.

Top stat: CBS' Kevin Harlan shared that on his first 14 carries against Cincinnati, Baltimore RB Derrick Henry had only 40 yards. However on his 15th carry he scrambled for 51 yards, setting up the game winning FG.

Top analysis: Fox's Daryl Johnston shares what causes most offensive frustrations i when a QB's timing gets thrown off. It often leads to ineligible men downfield and can cause PI's because they're trying to block downfield to protect the QB and don't realize it's been thrown.

Funniest line: After Daryl Johnston forced Kevin Kugler to share what he'd do as a head coach on a 2nd and 38, "Well, I'd throw the ball, and it might be a screen. They've done it. Good call, but that'll leave them well short of the 1st Down. It's 3rd and 34."

Worst Timing Award: Fox's Kevin Kugler shared that the Raiders were 10/10 on redzone possessions this season. Daryl Johnston then pointed out that a large portion of that success was because the Raiders had only committed 2 penalties in the redzone this season. This was followed up by a Surtain 100yd pick six.

Top reporting: Fox's Laura Okmin shared that in pregame interviews the Raiders felt Denver's offense couldn't beat them, but they needed to be wary of the D. At Halftime it was tied 10-10 thanks to the D beating them on that 100yd pick six.

Top stat: CBS' Andrew Catalon shared that on their first 15 plays Seattle gained 45 yards. On their last 2 plays of the Half they equaled that total with 45 additional yards.

Funniest comment: Fox's Kevin Burkhardt, "I asked you (Brady) earlier what you thought of your 1st encounter with Brock Purdy. I should have clarified as a broadcaster. I forgot that you 1st encountered him as a player in his 1st start in a game I'm sure you'd like to forget."

Top analysis: Fox's Tom Brady shared that holding the ball as a QB for 11 seconds is a positive in that it means you keep the defense running around and tiring them out, but it's only good if you actually gain yardage.

Top analysis: Fox's Tom Brady shared that losing your kicker to an injury is the hardest thing to adjust for. It leads you to go for it in ridiculous situations like 4th and 23 because you're unsure if you can rely on your punter, but it also keeps the game closer than it should be.

Top analysis: CBS' Andrew Catalon shares that the Seahawks quick strike offense is keeping the game close, but their inability to hold on to the ball has led to the Giants D dominating TOP- having more than 2 Qtr's worth. It's causing them to slowly fall behind.
