FA Cup and NASCAR highlight FOX Sports Saturday

Saturday's are typically known for their baseball coverage from May through August. This weekend will be one of those exceptions though. – Perhaps it’s fitting that on the 150th anniversary of England’s Football Association, the final of the FA Cup, the world’s oldest soccer competition and England’s main domestic cup tournament, is airing in the United States for the first time ever on broadcast television. Such is the case when, in true David and Goliath fashion, Manchester City and Wigan square off live on FOX, Saturday, May 11 (12:00-2:30 PM ET). FOX Sports renowned play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson calls the action with analysis from former England international standout Ian Wright live from London’s historic Wembley Stadium. One of the wealthiest clubs in the world, big-spending Manchester City is a five-time FA Cup champion and is jam-packed with star players such as Argentine striker Sergio Aguero and Spanish midfielder David Silva. ROSENTHAL: TROUT & HARPER - MAKE ROOM FOR MANNY –

In the past year, the baseball world has been buzzing about the Angels’ Mike Trout and Nationals’ Bryce Harper, two transcendent young talents, but MLB on FOX reporter and FOXSports.com featured columnist Ken Rosenthal says Orioles’ third baseman Manny Machado is building his case as one of the game’s top young stars. “Machado, 20, is 11 months younger than Trout, and three months and 10 days older than Harper. Machado ranks ahead of both Trout and Harper this season in the two most commonly used versions of Wins Above Replacement (WAR). If he moves back to shortstop — a possibility once J.J. Hardy’s contract expires after the 2014 season — he could become more valuable still,” Rosenthal writes. “If Machado sustains

his excellence over a full season, the Trout and Harper comparisons will begin in earnest. If he moves back to shortstop, he eventually might be considered the most indispensable of the three.”

HAMMOND & PETTY REACT TO NASCAR APPEALS DECISION –

Earlier today, a NASCAR appeals panel reduced most of the penalties to Joe Gibbs Racing for having an illegal connecting rod below the minimum weight requirement in Matt Kenseth’s win at Kansas Speedway on April 23. The points deducted from Kenseth were reduced from 50 to 12 while the panel reinstated the three bonus points he received for that victory. The appeals panel also reduced crew chief Jason Ratcliff’s suspension from six races to one race and eliminated owner Joe Gibbs’ six-race suspension. Ratcliff’s $200,000 fine was upheld. NASCAR analysts Kyle Petty and Jeff Hammond offered their thoughts below.

SPEED analyst Kyle Petty:

“The rules are antiquated, and this should be a wake-up call to NASCAR to look through the rulebook as the sport changes and change some of their findings and change the way

they do things. I see it as one of the fairest things that I’ve seen NASCAR do in a long time.”

SPEED and NASCAR on FOX analyst Jeff Hammond:

“One thing we don’t want to lose sight of is that the part was wrong. That’s probably the reason why the $200,000 fine stood. They aren’t just getting off ‘scott-free,’ but we’ve always, and Joe Gibbs has contended, that this part had gotten through the system and it shouldn’t have been there. Did the part help and enhance performance? No.”

TWO-TIME RED BULL X-FIGHTERS CHAMP NATE ADAMS RETURNS TO TOUR AS DARK HORSE

Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour happens live on FUEL TV this Saturday, May 11 (5:00 PM ET). The world’s top freestyle motocross (FMX) riders compete at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, CA, and two-time champ Nate Adams (2009, 2010) returns from injuries as Saturday’s dark horse, says FUEL TV analyst Andy Bell. “Nate is a big unknown. He hasn’t been on the tour since 2011 because of injuries. We’re not sure if he’s just been healing or coming up with new tricks. A lot has changed since he last competed, but he’s definitely the one to watch.” While Adams is a wildcard, Bell believes the unique course, the biggest on the tour, offers an advantage to two riders who grew up in Southern California - last year’s winner Todd Potter and third-place finisher Wes Agee. “They grew up riding in spots all over So Cal with 150- and 200-foot natural dirt jumps and are more comfortable on the bigger stuff,” says Bell. “This is their home turf. The course is big and wide open, with lots of options. Current tour leaders Dany Torres, Thomas Pages and Levi Sherwood are ramp kids and are more calculated in their riding, which might not translate as well at this stop.”

FOX SPORTS’ NLCS & NASCAR COVERAGE SCORE SPORTS EMMYS WINS –

FOX Sports Media Group took home two statuettes last night at the 34th Annual Sports Emmys presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. NASCAR on FOX won for Outstanding Live Event Audio/Sound, while MLB on FOX was victorious in the Outstanding Playoff Coverage category for its presentation of the National League Championship Series, Cardinals vs. Giants. FSMG Executive Vice President Jerry Steinberg and audio guru Freddy Aldous accepted the network’s NASCAR win. FSMG Executive Producer John Entz accepted the Sports Emmy for Outstanding Playoff Coverage. The two Emmy wins bring FOX Sports’ Emmy total to 91.
