ESPN's World University Games Announcing Assignments

It has taken a bit to compile this information, as in it isn't posted anywhere else, but the following teams are being used by ESPN for their World University Games coverage. My thanks goes to Brenda VanLengen (over in Russia) for the assist.

BASKETBALL: Brenda VanLengen and Danny Lee/ Danny Lee and Craig Jonas

WOMEN'S BEACH VOLLEYBALL: Brenda VanLengen and Adam Johnson

WATER POLO: Danny Lee and Richard Corso

MEN'S BEACH VOLLEYBALL: Danny Lee and Adam Johnson

INDOOR VOLLEYBALL: Danny Lee and Adam Johnson

As you can see from these broadcasts, it's no wonder ESPN is not carrying some of the events they were planning on doing so (like Monday's Water Polo game). It's kind of difficult to have the same announcer at two locales at the same time.

ESPN3 is also carrying coverage of Diving, Track & Field, and Gymnastics. I am trying to find out if ESPN3 is using the International Feed for these broadcasts, which  believe they are, or if they have their own broadcast teams at them. As I learn who is calling these events, I plan on posting the information here.

ESPN shares why they're bringing the World University Games to TV

Some people may be asking "What exactly are the World University Games? Why haven't I heard of them before? How long have they been going on? Why start to cover them now?" Hopefully this blog post will answer some of those questions. The comments shared here are taken from ESPN Front Row (http://frontrow.espn.go.com/2013/07/espnu-espn3-provide-extensive-live-coverage-of-world-university-games-from-kazan-russia/), the Kazan 2013 World University Games page (http://kazan2013.ru/en), and the International University Sports Federation site (http://www.fisu.net/en/Summer-Universiades-3490.html).

Most NCAA athletes are familiar with this event, but many sports fans might not be. What are the World University Games?
This is the 27th edition of the Summer Universiade games and the international competition will run July 6-17 from Kazan, Russia. It features student athletes ages 17-28 and has proven to be a platform for showcasing future stars that have gone on to be Olympians and professional athletes across the globe.

Why is ESPN interested in bringing the games to a US audience?
The World University Games are second only the Olympic Games in terms of number of participating athletes & countries represented. Some of basketball’s biggest names — like Ray Allen, Charles Barkley, Larry Bird and Allen Iverson — have represented the United States in previous years. It’s become clear this is an event that showcases some of the world’s best athletes. It’s really a hidden gem in the U.S. and we’re hoping to shine a light on these phenomenal athletes.

What can fans expect to see on ESPNU and ESPN3’s coverage?
Our coverage is focused predominantly on Team USA across a number of sports — men’s and women’s basketball, beach volleyball and track and field to name a few.

What is the most challenging part of programming the event?
Each event is featuring the best athletes around the globe, so the challenge was figuring out which events to distribute live. This year we plan to distribute a little more than 100 hours live on ESPN3. I feel we’re just at the tip of the iceberg with this event. The potential is there to produce and telecast 250-300 hours live.

Which event are you most interested in watching?
Men’s basketball. The opportunity is there for Team USA to meet Team Russia in the championship game. If it happens, I will be interested to see how the [Cleveland] Cavaliers first-round [2013 NBA Draft] pick Sergey Karasev performs against the best U.S. collegians.

Which events does the World University Games contain?
The Summer Universiade contains 13 sports- 10 compulsory and 3 optional sports. The 10 compulsory sports take place every 2 years. The 3 optional sports are chosen by the host nation. This year the events taking place include: athletics (track & field), basketball, fencing, football (soccer), artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, swimming, diving, water polo, table tennis, tennis, and volleyball. In 2017 taekwondo will be added as an 11th compulsory sport, and in 2019 archery will be added as compulsory sport #12. Before a limit was placed on optional sports (3), as many as 14 to 17 optional sporting events took place.

Is there a schedule of which events will be available in the US?

Yes. most of the events will be live on ESPN3 with same-day taped coverage on ESPNU. However ESPNU will air some events live. Check out our previous blog post- http://eyeonskyandairsports.blogspot.com/2013/07/world-university-games-to-air-on-espnu.html for those details.

Any other questions you want answered? Feel free to shoot me an e-mail, or post them in the comments section, and I will see what I can find out.

If you're interested in getting an early look of where Team USA will play their basketball games, Greg Wrubell (voice of BYU Football & men's basketball) is over in Russia (following BYU's Tyler Haws), and he has posted a view of teh arena. - https://twitter.com/gregwrubell/status/352436915917688832/photo/1

World University Games to air on ESPNU & ESPN3 live and same-day tape delay

The World University games is a competition similar to the Olympics where collegiate students compete against each other to determine who is the best in the world. The World University Games have been around since 1959. This year is the 27th edition of the summer games. In what could be classified as a historic moment for the World University Games though, for the first time ever they will be televised this year in the US. ESPNU will air many of the Team USA events on a same-day tape-delay basis while ESPN3 will air the US events live. Some events on ESPNU will also be live. Below is the press release from ESPN outlining details.

ESPNU and ESPN3 First to Carry World University Games in United States

ESPN Networks Set to Air 115 Hours of International University Sport Competition from Kazan, Russia

For the first time, the World University Games will be available to a national television audience in the United States. ESPNU and ESPN3 are set to carry 115 live hours of the 27th edition of the Summer Universiade taking place in Kazan, Russia July 6 – 17. The international competition features student athletes aged 17-28 and is second only to the Olympic Games in terms of number of participating athletes and countries represented. FISU (International Federation of University Sport) is the international governing body of the Universiades.
ESPNU will air 40-hours of competition that will include the United States Men’s & Women’s Basketball, Men’s & Women’s Beach Volleyball, Track & Field, Men’s Volleyball (indoor) and Men’s Water Polo teams in action abroad. ESPN3 will carry all 115 hours live, that will include additional coverage of the aforementioned sports as well as: Opening Ceremonies, Men’s & Women’s Diving, Men’s & Women’s Gymnastics, Swimming.
ESPN networks will air 14 events featuring some of the nation’s best collegiate athletes, over 11 days. Every event will be aired live on either ESPNU or ESPN3, with primetime re-airs on ESPNU to account for the time difference.
The Universiades have proven to showcase future stars that have gone on to perform at World Championship and Olympic level. American swimmer Dana Vollmer, a gold and silver medalist at the 2005 Summer Universiade in Izmir, Turkey went on to win three gold medals during the Olympic Games in London last summer.
This year Spencer Dinwiddie (Colorado), Luke Hancock (Louisville) and Doug McDermott (Creighton) are among the 12 chosen to represent the USA Men’s Basketball. Viewers will also have an opportunity to watch Sergey Karsey, a small forward for Russia just selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the NBA Draft. Full USA team rosters in each sport can be found here.
