World University Games to air on ESPNU & ESPN3 live and same-day tape delay

The World University games is a competition similar to the Olympics where collegiate students compete against each other to determine who is the best in the world. The World University Games have been around since 1959. This year is the 27th edition of the summer games. In what could be classified as a historic moment for the World University Games though, for the first time ever they will be televised this year in the US. ESPNU will air many of the Team USA events on a same-day tape-delay basis while ESPN3 will air the US events live. Some events on ESPNU will also be live. Below is the press release from ESPN outlining details.

ESPNU and ESPN3 First to Carry World University Games in United States

ESPN Networks Set to Air 115 Hours of International University Sport Competition from Kazan, Russia

For the first time, the World University Games will be available to a national television audience in the United States. ESPNU and ESPN3 are set to carry 115 live hours of the 27th edition of the Summer Universiade taking place in Kazan, Russia July 6 – 17. The international competition features student athletes aged 17-28 and is second only to the Olympic Games in terms of number of participating athletes and countries represented. FISU (International Federation of University Sport) is the international governing body of the Universiades.

ESPNU will air 40-hours of competition that will include the United States Men’s & Women’s Basketball, Men’s & Women’s Beach Volleyball, Track & Field, Men’s Volleyball (indoor) and Men’s Water Polo teams in action abroad. ESPN3 will carry all 115 hours live, that will include additional coverage of the aforementioned sports as well as: Opening Ceremonies, Men’s & Women’s Diving, Men’s & Women’s Gymnastics, Swimming.

ESPN networks will air 14 events featuring some of the nation’s best collegiate athletes, over 11 days. Every event will be aired live on either ESPNU or ESPN3, with primetime re-airs on ESPNU to account for the time difference.

The Universiades have proven to showcase future stars that have gone on to perform at World Championship and Olympic level. American swimmer Dana Vollmer, a gold and silver medalist at the 2005 Summer Universiade in Izmir, Turkey went on to win three gold medals during the Olympic Games in London last summer.

This year Spencer Dinwiddie (Colorado), Luke Hancock (Louisville) and Doug McDermott (Creighton) are among the 12 chosen to represent the USA Men’s Basketball. Viewers will also have an opportunity to watch Sergey Karsey, a small forward for Russia just selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the NBA Draft. John Strong NBCSN debut & MLS Breakaway returns August 3

John Strong will make his MLS on NBC Sports Network debut on Saturday, August 3 as one half of the studio host team. Strong will join Kyle Martino to host MLS Breakaway for 90 minutes after the completion of the NBC Sports Network featured match of Sporting Kansas City and the New York Red Bulls that night. MLS Breakaway Features Live Look-Ins to Four Games

STAMFORD, Conn. – July 1, 2013 – NBC Sports Group presents the second edition of MLS Breakaway on Saturday, August 3, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network. Saturday’s soccer coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. ET with the Sporting Kansas City-New York Red Bulls match, followed by the unique NBC Sports Group presentation MLS Breakaway (9-10:30 p.m. ET), a special 90-minute “whip-around” show featuring multiple live look-ins to regional broadcasts of four games being played at that time.

Nationwide, American Le Mans, NHRA, & IndyCar highlight Motorsports no ESPN July 1-7

The American Le Mans Series heads over to ESPN2 from SPEED for this Saturday's race. Returning appearances take place for the Nationwide Series, Friday Night in Primetime, the NHRA weekend, and IndyCar racing on ABC. NASCAR Nationwide Series in Prime Time from Daytona

NASCAR at Daytona is an Independence Day tradition. The NASCAR Nationwide Series races in prime time on Friday night, July 5, in the Subway Firecracker 250 at Daytona International Speedway and ESPN will have a live telecast. NASCAR Countdown airs at 7 p.m. ET with the race’s green flag at 7:50 p.m. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Carl Edwards will visit the booth for a portion of the race to join the commentary. Also from Daytona, ESPN2 will air qualifying on Friday at 2 p.m. All NASCAR programming on ESPN networks is also available on computers, smartphones and tablets through WatchESPN and the WatchESPN app.

The Daytona race will be the first of four consecutive events that comprise the NASCAR Nationwide Series Dash 4 Cash, a bonus program that will award an extra $100,000 to the highest-finishing of four eligible drivers in each of the four designated races and could award an additional $600,000 at the fourth race at Indianapolis next month.

Indy Car Returns to Pocono Live on ABC

After an absence of 24 years, Pocono (PA) Raceway will host the stars of open wheel racing when the IZOD IndyCar Series competes at the “Tricky Triangle” in a 400-mile race on Sunday, July 7. The 2.5-mile track was a keystone of open wheel racing for many years but held its last race of that type in 1989. ABC will have a live telecast of the return, with pre-race at noon ET and the race’s green flag at 12:30 p.m.

Veteran NHRA driver Tommy Johnson Jr. will be a guest roving analyst for ESPN during the weekend. American Le Mans Series Back in Action at Lime Rock

After the traditional schedule break to allow race teams to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the American Le Mans Series is back in action this weekend with an event at Connecticut’s Lime Rock Park. The race will air on Saturday, July 6, at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and on ESPN3 at 2:45 p.m. Also from Lime Rock, ESPN3 will air qualifying on Friday, July 5, at 4:25 p.m. All American Le Mans Series programming on ESPN2 and ESPN3 also is available on computers, smartphones and tablets through WatchESPN and the WatchESPN app.

NASCAR Now Schedule

With the 4th of July nearly upon us, most teams get ready for a full fledged double header week of Major League Soccer regular season action. Since it is the regular season, every game will be televised and available on MLS Live, though MLS Live will have some blackout restrictions.

As always I will try and make sure information gets updated in a timely manner should a TV station be altered or an additional one be added.
