The Weekends News and Notes and Early Broadcast Assignments by Rudy Martzke (Oct 13-16, 2022 edition)

Top call: Matt Barrie on ESPN after UCF QB John Rhys Plumlee connected with WR Kobe Hudson on a 64-yard touchdown pass against Temple on UCF's "Space Night": "That is one small step for John Rhys Plumlee and one giant leap for Kobe Hudson."

Fox Sports Mark Helfrich was all over officials missing what he considering obvious calls. After a missed PI call, his enthusiasm caused him to protest, "That is cheating on the Bears that was clearly missed."

Best exchange: Fox Sports Mark Helfrich and Noah Eagle briefly talked about player conditioning and strength, leading to an interesting comparison.

Mark Helfrich: "That looks like your arms. I saw you working out this morning. "

Noah responds, "Yeah, Well I won't tell you what I was injecting in there."

Best comparison: Fox Sports Mark Helfrich commented on how West Virginia's QB was pumping up the crowd. "J.T., he came out like a conductor, pumping up the crowd."

Best stat: With 11 minutes remaining Fox Sports Mark Helfrich shared that West Virginia head coach Neal Brown is 15-2 when they rush over 100 yards but only 3-19 when they get fewer than 100 yards.

Best timing: Fox Sports Noah Eagle revealed that West Virginia was 12/15 on 4th Down this season before Baylor held them on a 4th and 1.

Best stat: With 8 minutes remaining and Baylor leading 37-33 Fox Sports Noah Eagle revealed Baylor had an 0-5 record playing in Morgantown. A minute later West Virginia scored to go ahead 40-37. West Virginia would go on to win 43-40.

Best timing: With only :08 remaining Fox Sports Noah Eagle revealed Baylor was only 1/3 on 3rd Down conversions in the 2nd Half. West Virginia held again to allow them to seal a 43-40 win.

Funniest line: ESPN’s Peyton Manning told Rece Davis, “I haven’t cared about a Kansas/Oklahoma game since Danny Manning took on Mookie Blaylock in the ‘88 Final Four.”

Lightning within the vicinity caused some camera personnel to move from their usual spots in the Auburn/Ole Miss game. ESPN made the right decision. The game was in the 4th Quarter with a 1 possession game. Ole Miss led 41-34. Angles weren’t the greatest, but safety was the top priority.

ESPN's Robert Griffin III had some advice for recognizing who to throw to to avoid intentional grounding after Quinn Ewers had a near back pass fumble. "You know, he hasn't played many games, so I understand he's trying to throw the football away near an eligible receiver, but if the eligible receiver is behind you brother, you can't throw it there. Good job getting back on top of it."

Best nugget: CBS Sports Gary Danielson shared with Nessler and viewers that he received a text from Verne and he said, “It’s days like this that I miss it."

Best line: CBS Sports Gary Danielson, on the epic Tennessee/Alabama game, “I feel Nantz, Romo, and Wolfson isn’t going to match us tonight. I know they have Bills/Chiefs but it’s pretty good today.”

Strongest comment: CBS Sports Gary Danielson on Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs:  “I've been here doing these SEC games for 17 years; he's as good as any back I've seen in this league."

Fox Sports Tim Brando & Spencer Tillman were money on the double OT game between Michigan State/Wisconsin. Tilllman, prior to the play told viewers the exact pass to the end zone that was coming. Brando, was perfect on the winning TD win. He let the production shots tell the story.

Clever line: Fox Sports Tim Brando, after a sack by  Michigan State DT Simeon Barrow Jr, “The redshirt sophomore from Grovetown, GA. That was a peach of a sack.”

Best call: Fox Sports Tim Brando, after Michigan State WR Keon Coleman caught a a TD pass in the 4th Quarter, “Touchdown!  Keon Coleman. Your call at the top of the show!”  Tillman stressed how important Coleman would factor in the game.

Fox Sports Spencer Tillman doesn’t get as much credit or attention to calling plays before they happen. He’s been doing this since he was a young whippersnapper. Others at other networks get credit for doing it but it was basically 1 franchise & 1 season. Since then, not too much.

Best Quib: After an Alabama/Tennessee score update, ESPN's Dave Pasch commented "We may need another tv up here so we can watch the end of that game."

Best stat: ESPN's Dusty Dvoracek revealed that BYU was 1-2 when giving up more than 200 yards rushing this season, a feat that had happened 3 times aleady. BYU went on to give up 277 yards rushing and 2 rushing TD's, ultimately providing the difference in a  17 point game.

Turner Sports Bob Costas can rattle off names of players on a team from yesteryear and historic plays. He knows baseball like no other.

Best line: Turner Sports Bob Costas, “About an hour or so ago, what kind of odds would you have gotten that Triston McKenzie would be out in the 6th and Severino would still be out there in the 6th?” Severino had 31 pitches in the 1st Inning.

Best flashback: While doing the intro for LSU/Florida, ESPN's Joe Tessitore revealed the last time LSU visited the Swamp was the famous shoe throwing incident.

Best stat: ESPN's Joe Tessitore revealed that Florida has averaged 3 minutes per scoring series this season. However in their opening drive it only took :51 seconds.

Top stat: Fox Sports Jason Benetti revealed that last time Utah gave up 14 1st Quarter points at home was 2018 vs. USC. Utah would come back to win that game 42-28.

Oops award: Fox Sports Jason Benetti said the only time USC has defeated Utah in Salt Lake City was the pandemic shortened season in 2020. However USC also defeated Utah in Salt Lake City in 2012, Utah's second season in the Pac-12, 38-28.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Brock Huard said when a team loses its composure and loses its cool, it usually leads to mistakes. This time USC player complaints lead to a Utah touchdown.

Top observation: Fox Sports Allison Williams reported that USC's offense started to slow down because players keep coming to the sideline to catch their breath due to the elevation tiring them out earlier than usual.

Fox Sports Dean Blandino was spot on in explaining why a pass was incomplete when the ball wasn't controlled to the ground and why Utah was awarded a timeout back when the officials told them they'd need to use a timeout to avoid a 10-second runoff when a call was upheld instead of reversed. The 10-second runoff would have only taken place if the replay was reversed.

Top observation: Turner Sports Jeff Francoeur revealed that the Astros never looked at bringing anyone in to replace Carlos Correa because the Astros had great faith in Jeremy Pena being a top batter. Pena has the second best AB average for his position this season, and he hit the game winning home run for the Astros in their series clinching win against Seattle.

Father/Son Award: A new NFL Father/Son on-air voice joined the exclusive list Sunday. Ian and Noah Eagle (has called NFL games for Nickelodeon) made his Fox Sports debut Sunday. Other father/son combos are Jack and Joe Buck, Marv and Kenny Albert, and Phil and Chris Simms.

Strongest comment: CBS Sports Adam Archuleta, after Bengals QB Joe Burrow is sacked on opening drive vs. New Orleans as RB Joe Mixon whiffs on a block, “You've got to make that block -- otherwise Burrow doesn't have a chance."

Top Analysis: Fox Sports Greg Olsen said it was the Jets D Front 4 that has caused their turnaround from a year ago. Turnovers, QB pressure, and tackles for loss are all up from 1 year ago because the Front 4 has improved.

Best call: CBS Sports Greg Gumbel, as Bengals QB Joe Burrow improvised a 19-yard TD run on 3rd and 8 vs. Saints: "Burrow, trying to elude the pressure and now he's gonna take off and run it -- he'll have a 1st down; he'll have a touchdown!"

Fox Sports Noah Eagle showed the pipes in full effect and enthusiasm of the interception by Falcons Hawkins on Jimmy Garoppolo. Noah will be calling NFL games for generations to come.

Class act: Fox Sports Curt Menefee, during a game cut-in of Jets score on the Packers, welcomed Noah Eagle to Fox NFL Sunday.

Strong comment: Fox Sports Daryl Johnston, on Brady missing time & walk-thru, "Question #1- Why is Robert Kraft having his wedding on a Friday during FB season. #2- the optics it creates if you miss time &  performance isn’t at the level you’re asking everyone else to perform to.”

Best exchange: CBS Sports Greg Gumbel and Adam Archuleta on Saints Taysom Hill. Archuleta: "I gotta ask you Greg, if you grew up playing QB your whole life & were a star, would you enjoy being told you have to go out there and block as a TE?"
Gumbel, “Well, I wouldn't like that anyway!"

Fox Sports Brandon Gaudin quickly knew the rules as Steelers Chase Claypool caught the ball going out of bounds. 1 elbow equals 2 feet was on the money. “That’s a catch!”

Best Timing Award: CBS Sports' Jim Nantz revealed that Kansas City was 57% on 3rd and 10 this season moments before Patrick Mahomes threw a TD pass on a 3rd and 10 play.

Best stat: CBS Sports' Jim Nantz informed viewers that CBS Sports' Research told him that this was the first time in a century that both teams committed turnovers inside the redzone on their first possessions of the game.

Best line: CBS Sports Jim Nantz, referring to Buffalo at Kansas City: "With all those points we had after the 2 minute warning last time ,we've got a scoreless first quarter. "

Best stat: CBS Sports' Tony Romo revealed that Buffalo has the best conversion rate on 3rd Down in the NFL and that Kansas City is #2.

Top observation: Turner Sports Bob Costas, on Jose Ramirez hitting 7–15 in the series, I don’t think he’s hit more than 3 or 4 balls hard. He’s had a lot of nubblers, bloops, and squibbers and they’ve gone his way.

Hustle Award: Brandon Gaudin on Saturday called Minnesota/Illinois for BTN and then called NFL action Sunday for Fox betwen Tampa Bay/Pittsburgh.

Dick Ebersol is on the money on Romo and his enthusiasm. Something missed by many viewers is on big 3rd and 4th Down, Romo is asking Jim Nantz. “What would you do here, Jim?
