News and Notes (Oct 16-22) and Broadcast Assignments (Oct 24-30) by Rudy Martzke

Top analysis: ESPN's Troy Aikman noting the best way to have a chance to beat Dallas is to maintain a consistent balanced attack on offense. Having to focus on passing allows them to apply the pressure almost every play and force many more turnovers.

Top Foresight: ESPN's Troy Aikman sharing that on 4th and 1, you don't even have to look at the chart. It almost always says go for it. On 4th and 1 Dallas did a QB sneak by Dak for an 18-yd TD to tie it up 7-7.

Funniest exchange: ESPN's Troy Aikman, "In 23 years this is the first time I'm using that number thing. Is that good television?"
Joe Buck then quipped, "It's a historic moment. Send that into the broadcast television Hall of Fame."

Top Call: ESPN's Joe Buck, "3rd and 5, and this one's batted... and caught by Herbert. Wow! You know you're having a good night when you catch your own batted catch and then scramble for the 1st!"

ESPN’s Chris Berman doing highlights with the sound effect of popping the cork of the champagne bottle when the last undefeated team loses to pay homage to celebrate the 1972 Dolphins team is simply golden.

Say what?: CBS Sports Malik Zaire said you should never play conservative on 3rd Down, even when it's 1 or 2 yards, unless you're planning on going for it on 4th.

Top analysis: CBS Sports Malik Zaire pointing out the last thing you want to do when a RB is coming back from an injury is give him the ball every play because it risks having an injury reflare up and can tire him out faster and make him ineffective in the 2nd Half.

Captain Obvious Award: CBS Sports Malik Zaire saying the best way to avoid a turnover on the kickoff is to have both hands placed around the ball so the opposing team can't knock it lose.

Funniest line: CBS Sports Alex Del Barrio, "Since he backpedaled to get that pass off, does that mean he backstroked his way into the endzone?"

Top analysis: Fox Sports John Smoltz sharing one of the big disadvantages for a pitcher coming back from an injury is they don't have the ability to judge pitching corners as well as when they've consistently pitched and figured out a strikezone.

Top observation: ESPN’s Cole Cubelic noting New Mexico State QB Diego Pavia how decisive he is and the decisions he makes makes him so effective. Cubelic notes Pavia doesn’t have a huge arm and is a competitor that understands how to manipulate defenders.

Best Timing Award: ESPN’s Cole Cubelic telling viewers Texas El-Paso QB Cade McConnell hasn’t shown a lot of calm in the pocket early on. Cubelic on 3rd & 5 told viewers look for OC Scotty Ohara call a run. Next play, RB Deion Hankins ran the ball for 54 yards to the 2 yard line.

Top nugget: ESPN’s Cole Cubelic telling viewers that UCF, Florida, Kansas, Oregon State, and UTEP are the only programs to have 2 RB’s that have rushed for more than 450 yards this season.

Best exchange: ESPN’s John Schriffen getting Cole Cubelic to excel by asking about the 54 yard run by  Hankins, “Just to put that last play to bed. Should the safety have been able to make that tackle?”

Cubelic retorts, “It’s what you are on the field to do!”

ESPN’s John Schriffen is one of the best at telling viewers exactly how many yards were gained on a run or catch and at precisely identifying the correct yard line with the down and exact distance needed to the 1st and to the endzone.

Top analysis: ESPN's Cole Cubelic noting one of the reasons why so many teams score tons of points of offense is bc defensive tackling has become a lost art. Most teams rely on gang tackling instead of teaching players to wrap up 1 on 1, & result is big plays in 1 on 1 situations

Top analysis: ESPN's Cole Cubelic is a fan of the XFL and USFL. He shares those players are able to come back and act as mentors for college players during the offseason, which not only prepares them for the current season but gives them a head start on future possibilities.

Top exchange: ESPN's John Schriffen asked Cole Cubelic why illegal man downfield is getting called more the past two seasons than earlier years. Cole, "It was a call officials tended to ignore, so most teams didn't feel it hurt them. Now there's an increased focus on fairplay."

Top reporting: ESPN's John Schriffen telling viewers that New Mexico State has so many talented running backs that they've begun experimenting having some players play both ways so they can apply more pressure on the opposing QB with pure speed.

Top analysis: ESPN's Cole Cubelic sharing that one of the reasons why you don't bring a blitz every play is because it makes it harder on the offense. They never know when you're going to bring the blitz, and it often will result in players unblocked leading to an easy sack.

Top analysis: ESPN's Rene Ingoglia noting the key for any successful run conversion is to get vertical. Running diagonal gains yardage, but it usually leaves you short.

Best Timing Award: ESPN's Rene Ingoglia sharing the best way to stop an opposing teams momentum is to get a quick score showing you can answer any score they make right as Rice goes for 6 plays in less than a minute for a touchdown.

Oops Award: On ESPN's Coming Up graphic they are advertising SMU/Temple Friday night for ESPN2. However the game was moved to ESPN Wednesday night when the Aces won the WNBA Championship.

Top nugget: Prime’s Al Michaels telling viewers that Jaguars play only have 1 game in the next 23 days.

Top reporting: ESPN's Lericia Harris noting that Rice has equal distribution to receivers because all of them have memorized the route and know where to be. Rene then added the other factor is Daniels doesn't focus on a specific receiver and studies the field until he releases.

Top analysis: ESPN's Gary Reasons sharing that giving up 1-2 big plays a game are expected, but when you've given up 6 plays of 20+ yards and thrown a pick six it means you typically have either the wrong line or the wrong players in positions.

Top information: ESPN's Patrick Netherton sharing that Northwestern State had planned on staying in Austin on Friday night for Ronnie Caldwell's funeral, but the F1 race weekend made it where there are no vacancies.

Top Information: ESPN's Patrick Netherton sharing that in a season where they're currently winless, the kicking team has been a Northwestern State highlight. Overall they're perfect on extra points and 7/8 on field goals.

Top Information: ESPN's Patrick Netherton sharing that one of the segments this week on Big Noon Saturday will feature Fox Sports Tom Rinaldi interviewing Southeastern Louisiana's defensive line coach Tom Rinaldi. No, they aren't related.

Nice touch: Prime’s Al Michaels giving the legend John Madden a shoutout after Saints kicker Blake Gupe’s extra point hit the upright and went through. Michaels immediately said, “Doink.” and told viewers John Madden was the first analyst to use the term and it fits perfectly.

Funniest line: ESPN's Patrick Netherton, on a penalty call where the wrong team (Northeastern instead of Northwestern State) was announced, "Right number, wrong team. I'm pretty sure they (Northeastern) shutdown football after the 2009 season.”

Credit Award: NBC Sport young broadcaster Jac Collinsworth, a Notre Dame alum, playing it down the middle, in what was Notre Dames biggest and most impressive win in years for the program on Saturday. Never easy calling your own schools games on national television.

Funniest exchange: NBC Sports Rick Allen and Jeff Burton as Jeff's nephew, Jeb, was qualifying:

Jeff, “Jeb bought dinner last night, so I have to talk good about him.

Rick,”You have to talk good about your nephew all the time, don't you?

Rick, “Not if he doesn't buy dinner!”

Worst Timing Award: CBS Sports Aaron Taylor mentioning Air Force is one of the least penalized teams in the NCAA and that they only had 1 last week before they got 3 penalties on the next 4 snaps.

Top reporting: CBS Sports Rich Waltz sharing that most Commander in Chief games start slow because they're the teams the service academies prepare for the most and because they run similar styles.

Best Timing Award: ABC's Dave Pasch telling viewers that UCF's offensive struggles have come because they've only had 2 consecutive plays of positive yards. Immediately after on 3rd and 3 they scrambled for 54, but then had plays if 0, 0, and -5 on a redzone drive.

Top observation: ABC’s Dave Pasch noting immediately noting on a 3rd Down stop by Oklahoma that UCF QB John Rhys Plumlee’s helmet came off and would have to come out of the game if they went for it in 4th Down and inches. UCF kicked the FG.

Top analysis: ABC's Dusty Dvoracek telling viewers that the central key to Oklahoma's D is Stellar Shephard. Shepard leads the team in tackles and has helped contribute big game changing plays. When he's blocked is when other teams offenses have been able to move the ball.

Best stat: ABC's Dave Pasch telling viewers Oklahoma is 23-1 last 24 games in the game after Texas.

Top analysis: ESPN's Dusty Dvoracek sharing that Oklahoma's quick offensive runs lead to opposing penalties because when they haven't substituted players, the defense is at a disadvantage trying to sub because they can snap when there's 12 players on the field for an easy 5.

Top analysis: ABC's Dusty Dvoracek sharing that Plumlee's scrambling ability leads to big plays because it forces CB's to move up to prepare to tackle, thereby opening up a WR.

Top observation: ABC’s Tom Lunginbill noting that Oklahoma defense is forcing UCF QB Plumlee due to his right leg bothering him is pressuring up the middle and force him lateral so that he can’t flip his hips around to get his feet around.

Mixed Metaphors Award: ESPN’s Louis Riddick, after a long pass by Arkansas falls untouched in waning seconds against Mississippi State. “You can't put it so far out of the ZIP Code that it's just a long fly ball."

Strongest comment: CBS Sports Aaron Taylor declaring, “Nick Saban isn’t going to lose 2 games at home in the same season.”

Top observation: ABC’s Tom Luginbill noting that Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel is making the plays at the most critical times in the game when it’s needed the most.

Best line: ESPN’s Mark Jones, “KJ Jefferson started the day wearing Louis Vuitton, but during this offense looks like they shop at Payless.”

Top analysis: Fox's Spencer Tillman noting Quinton Ewers is having success passing because Houston is intentionally leaving the WR's room to catch to make sure nothing gets behind them.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Tim Brando sharing that Texas going for a fake FG up 21-7 provides the impression that Texas is trying to bury the Cougars. It also could backfire and swing momentum to the Cougars.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Spencer Tillman, "Crisis identifies who a team is. It removes what the potential is, exposes your gaps, and shows exactly what you currently are.

Funniest line: Fox Sports Tim Brando, "After the dispute they find Golden again. Buy gold. It's good at this time of the year."

Top analysis: Fox Sports Spencer Tillman, after a Houston tip of the pass on Texas" QB Quinn Evers, noting that if you can't get to the Quarterback then affect the direction of the ball.

Top observation: Fox Sports Tim Brando noting that Houston QB Donovan Smith is a much better Quarterback when he gets rid of the ball quickly.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Spencer Tillman noting that Houston QB Donovan Smith has to get his vision proper and accuracy down to get that QB relationship with the reviewers where it needs to be.

Top analysis: Fox Spencer Tillman explaining to viewers that Texas was in ran coverage because the Houston offense run game isn't working.

Best analysis: Fox Sports Spencer Tillman noting that Houston Cougars head coach Dana Holgorsen is one of the best top 10 coaches to make real time adjustments in the game.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Spencer Tillman explaining Texas is in the match cover concept. Once those vertical routes got 10 yards that zone disappears. Everybody is matched up in man and Dan Holgorsen is finding a solution.

Strongest comment: Fox Sports Spencer Tillman, on Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian, "I think he's a top 3 play caller in America. He may be the best."

Top observation: Fox Sports Spencer Tillam  noting on Houston QB Donovan Smith that because of his height he loses a lot of leverage when you try and spin and stay high.

Best Timing Award: Fox Sports Tim Brando, after a penalty flag was thrown, "They make pick this up!  Sometimes when you see this long conversation they pickup the flag."

Top analysis: Fox Sports Tim Brando sharing that Texas going for a fake FG up 21-7 provides the impression that Texas is trying to bury the Cougars. It also could backfire and swing momentum to the Cougars.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Petros Papadakis sharing the different cadence and general depression are helping lead Texas Tech to so many turnovers. The offense isn't used to the cadence, leading to additional penalties, and general depression of being on their 3rd QB makes the o-line feel they aren't protecting anyone.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Petros Papadakis sharing that while BYU has had success with the pass and Texas Tech with the run, both teams came into the game with a focus on strengthening the otherside. It led to BYU's longest run and Texas Tech's longest pass of the season.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Petros Papadakis sharing that defensive line injuries early in the season have caused BYU to give up more passing yardage than expected because it has forced them to go to the back-ups fro mlast season that play too far off the ball.

Best stat: Fox Sports Mark Schlereth telling viewers that Bucs QB Baker Mayfield has 61 batted passes, most in the NFL since 2019.

Funniest line: Fox Sports Kevin Kugler telling viewers that “Bears QB Tyson Bagent played in front of 2,123 fans last year. Quite more today in Chicago.”

Best stat: Fox Sports Kevin Kugler telling viewers the Bears since 1980 has had 46 different Quarterbacks start 1 game.

Best line: CBS Sports Spero Dedes, after Browns' DE Myles Garrett jumps over Colts' linemen to block a field goal attempt, “So you can put 'leaping tall buildings in a single bound' on  his resume too."

Top analysis: CBS Sports Adam Archuleta sharing the best way to shutdown a young QB is to rattle them with different formations and force them into pressure passes. A lot of time it will lead to incompletions, turnovers, or a series being shutdown.

Top reporting: CBS Sports Aditi Kinkhabwala telling viewers that every Tuesday the Colts spend time on a different community outreach program. This last weekend that involved golfing at a driving range with youth from around the community.

Best line: CBS Sports Spero Dedes, "It's Gardner Minshew, breaking out a little Minshew magic, and he's in for the TD. More importantly, he's given the Colts back the lead. Who'd have seen this coming against this defense?"

Funniest exchange: CBS Sports Spero Dedes, "What a back and forth affair. First Minshew's TD run, then an interception, now overturned, and a run attack that's always dangerous. All this in a 4-point affair."

Adam Archuleta, "In other words it's been a boring game, right?"

Top analysis: CBS Sports Spero Dedes pointing out that the Browns punting instead of going for it on a 4th and 2 was the smart play because the Colts have all 3 timeouts, and you definitely don't want them to have a short field with the lead and that amount remaining.

Best Timing Award: Right after commending the Browns for punting the ball, CBS Sports’ Dedes witnesses the Browns force a strip sack in the endzone to give the Browns the lead. Instead of giving the Colts the short field they get the TD through D.

Top Reporting: CBS Sports Aditi Kinkhabwala sharing in her pregame interview Browns DC Jim Schwartz, he wasn't worried about lack of turnovers. Instead he was focused on teaching fundamentals, bc TO's will occur naturally through them. Today's results- 2 forced fumbles for 14 pts

Top stat: CBS Sports Andrew Catalon noting that the NY Giants TD to go up 7-0 was their first TD in a month, their first 1st Half TD of the season, and their first TD at home this season.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Mark Schlereth telling viewers that the hold called most often is because a player is dragged to the field. It comes down to coaching. You have to share what holds and legal and what ones will always lead to negative yardage.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Mark Schlereth sharing that a 2-3 yard run isn't a bad play because it forces the defense to move up, resulting in 1-on-1 coverage that could lead to big plays.

Best move: CBS Sports reuniting Spero Dedes and Adam Archuleta this season. Their chemistry is shining through the screen in this terrific 1st Half between Browns/Colts. The addition of Aditi Kinkhabwala to the duo is paying off for CBS Sports.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Dean Blandino, on an apparent fumble on goaline could go either way. Look #1 shows it may have been fumble out of endzone, which ends in touchback. Look #2 shows the left elbow could be ruled down at 1/2 yrd line out of bounds. It can be either, a challenge must be made.

Top info: Fox Sports Chris Myers sharing that Kacy Rodgers told them they (Bucs D) like playing with pressure because it makes them play faster, resulting in bigger plays and more forced turnovers.

Top analysis: CBS Sports Matt Ryan sharing the key to growing the offense is to run plays you're familiar with even if it puts you behind the play because it allows you to grow and leads to fewer turnovers.

Top analysis: CBS Sports Tiki Barber sharing the last thing you want to do as a visiting team is to have too many missed opportunities. The missed opportunities allow the home team to stay in the game as the 13th man and cause you problems throughout.

Top stat: CBS Sports Andrew Catalon telling viewers Washington has matched a season high with 8 penalties, but there's still a quarter to go.

Top info: CBS Sports Andrew Catalon noting that even though a players helmet is touched at the 16 yards line after a catch, officials are told not to blow the play dead and instead discuss it afterwards to make sure the correct call is made. You never want to end a play early.

Top stat: CBS Sports Andrew Catalon telling viewers that the NY Giants blocked a FG for the first time in 98 games to stop the Commanders momentum and keep it a full 1 score game.

Top analysis: CBS Sports Ian Eagle telling viewers the key to victory all comes down to how you manage the clock and your possessions, because failure to do so gives the opponent too many opportunities.

Top analysis: CBS Sports Charles Davis sharing the key differences between today and old days comes down largely to the TE position. The TE is essentially an extra receiver, and the QB typically has more zip to the ball because they have more strength.

Top flashback: CBS Sports Charles Davis sharing that Buffalo Bills fans must be having nightmares today. They lost to KC in the playoffs with 13 seconds left. Today they trail the Pats with 12 seconds left. The similarities are very Eerie.

Best stat: CBS Sports Ian Eagle sharing that with today's win, Bill Belichick now has 300 career wins, only the 3rd head coach in the NFL to reach that milestone. (Shula and Halas).

Strongest comment: CBS Sports Adam Archuleta immediately disagreeing with with officials on a pass interference call on the Colts. Archelta referred to officials no longer calling a ball uncatchable. Archuleta declared. “Calvin Johnson wouldn’t have been able to make that catch.”

Top analysis: CBS Sports Tiki Barber sharing the worst feeling you have is when you lose a game because of a badly thrown ball. You spend the entire offseason working on badly thrown balls to prep for it. It's the one thing you never want to lose on.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Jonathan Vilma sharing what makes a team successful isn't wins/losses. It all comes down to how a head coach develops chemistry. Wins will come naturally, but only chemistry allows you to become successful and consistent.

Top info: Fox Sports Kenny Albert sharing that if you looked solely at offensive numbers, you'd think the Cardinals record was very different. They lead the league in most offensive categories, but overall they're only 1-5 because of defensive struggles.

Best analysis: Fox Sports Jonathan Vilma noting that only the center's head can break the line without being offsides since he has to line up over the football. Any other offensive linemen whose head breaks the line draws an offsides flag.

Top analysis: Fox Sports Daryl Johnston sharing that you can never gain any rhythm when you're drawing continual penalties or being hit for losses, so it leads to many team losses.

Top info: Fox Sports Adam Amin sharing that the Rams DC Raheem Morris came into this season with one main goal- don't throw out fancy plays. Instead build a steady defensive scheme that will allow players to grow together.

Top reporting: Fox Sports Adam Amin sharing that because Puka Nacua has the ability to make plays both deep and on the slant, it has led the center of the field to be left wide open. With his speed Puka then outruns the defense and makes the catches.

Top stat: Fox Sports Adam Amin sharing Puka Nacua's season high in receptions at BYU was 48. After just 6 games in the NFL he's already sitting at 50 this year.

Best graphic: CBS Sports production showing that through minimum of 80 games that the Mahomes/Reid winning percentage is higher than Brady/Belichick and Starr/Lombardi combos.

Top analysis: CBS Sports Trent Green telling viewers the reason most running backs are difficult to tackle doesn't deal just with speed. They are built with a bunch of lower body strength allowing them to power out of many tackles.

Top analysis: CBS Sports Trent Green noting that while it is rare for a RB to get called for a false start, the momentum of running left to right and then cutting forward can cause it because they sometimes forget to get in a set position.

CBS Sports Trent Green is really beginning to separate himself from other analysts into an elite level.  Green’s appearances on CBSSN’s Monday NFL QB is a tremendous watch.

Irony Award: NBC Sports Cris Collinsworth calling Don Shula’s 300th win game between Dolphins/Eagles on NBC and 32 years later is on the call once again on the call for NBC for Dolphins/Eagles the same day another coach, Bill Belichick notches his 300th win earlier today.

Best line: NBC Sports Cris Collingsworth, on Nick Sirianni going for it on 4th Down from own 26 yard line, “It’s a 51/49 kind of decision you’re talking about. It takes a lot of courage to do it and a lot of coaches don’t do it to avoid the backlash if you don’t make it.

Top Stat: Fox Sports Joe Davis sharing that no team has ever had a losing home record and gone to the World Series. Houston will try to be the first in Game 7 against Texas.

Top Stat: Fox Sports Matt Vasgersian sharing that teams who out-homer their opponent are 19-3 in the 2023 postseason.
