College Football News and Notes and Early Broadcast Assignments (Nov 12, 2022 edition)

Find NFL News and Notes here

Best History: ESPN's Dave Flemming shared that Navy/Notre Dame started because Notre Dame enrollment dropped below 3,000 during WW2, threatening their football program's existence until Navy agreed to play them. To repay the favor, ND served as a Naval recruitment site in the 1950's & 60's.

Funniest line: ESPN’s Joe Tessitore, as the 3rd Quarter was winding down and Greg McElroy notes , “I would have an answer for #40 (LSU’s Harold Perkins) “He’s been a nightmare." Tessitore quips, "Well he can't sack you during commercial break.”

Running is key to regaining momentum: After expounding on North Texas' 2nd Qtr stats, Stadium's Chris Hassell broke out on a UAB power run, "That's not McBride. That's the little guy, Jermaine Brown Jr. 5' 8", 185, squatting the entire North Texas defense."

Funniest line: Stadium's Chris Hassell. "And on the tackle is North Texas' Jordan Brown. He's saying I'm not having any of that dancing, SIT DOWN!"

Best info: Stadium's Chris Hassell revealed that a North Texas win over UAB would clinch them a spot in the CUSA title game, likely setting up a rematch in San Antonio against UTSA.

Funniest line: ESPN's Rod Gilmore. "This Clemson student section will give anyone a run for their money. They got here early, early. I got here 3 hours early, and it felt like I went a couple of miles and took an hour to get in."

Ominous Foreshadowing: ESPN's Rod Gilmore asked which was a bigger risk: a hail mary or a 57-yard FG attempt. The answer: Neither. Louisville QB Malik Cunningham chose to scramble and instead suffered an injury.

Funniest exchange: ESPN- When football becomes wrestling...
Rod Gilmore, "There's a little horse collar."
Wes Durham: "Jordan McFadden 2-point takedown on Quincy Riley."

Best stat: ESPN's Wes Durham revealed that Louisville's 54-yard pass from Brock Domann to Tyler Hudson was the first 50+ yard play Clemson gave up this season.

Best transition: ESPN's Wes Durham, "So the big play to Hudson leads to a FG, but Clemson's still 2 TD's ahead when we continue."

Best quip: CBS Sports Ross Tucker threw out a random stat claiming Radson Jane is the smallest 26 year old lineman in CFB this year and then stated,
Tucker: "Somebody check that for me."
Chris Lewis: "You might be safe in saying that."
Tucker: "That's the beauty in saying a random stat like that. No one's going to take the time to look that up."

Best Positive Outlook: CBS Sports Chris Lewis stated one of the positive reasons for expanding the CFB Playoff is the current 4 team playoff becomes regionalized and oftentimes causes G5 fans to not tune in.

Best statement: CBS Sports Chris Lewis stated you don't have a 27-8 record over 3 seasons unless you have a high standard of discipline like AFA head coach Troy Calhoun (who was calling players to the sideline and telling them to stop celebrating a blowout win).

Best insight: CBS Sports Ross Tucker shared that a lot of the times when a WR goofs on a play, it's because a WR has to read the coverage and adjust the routes based off of what they see once a play has already started.

Best shared interview: CBS Sports Chris Lewis shared that UNM football players went without access to weight rooms from March 2020- January 2022.
Ross Tucker responded, "It's tough to develop young players that way when they're trying to train to win."

Funniest line: After Tank Smith made some plays, Fox Sports Tim Brando stated, "I had a guy lower than me that size that tried to make me into a soprano. It helped me make my decision. The next year I was calling games with my dad."

Funniest comment: Fox Sports Tim Brando in the snowstorm at Penn State, "So you say you want to be a mascot? It's lonely. I will say this, he's continuing to move. On the other side, I'm ready for Studio 54 once this game's over."

Best stat: Fox Sports Tim Brando revealed the Maryland/Penn State football game heavily effects recruiting. 9 players from Virginia are on Maryland's roster compared to 7 for Penn State, but even bigger: 6 players from Pennsylvania are on Maryland's roster compared to 13 from Maryland appearing on Penn State's.

Best exchange: Fox Sports Tim Brando revealed that a power cord nearly kept him from having any info tonight. After thanking the individual who provided a cord, Tim Brando stated, "Without them I wouldn't have any insight tonight."
Spencer Tillman responded, "That's good, because I wouldn't have shared my power cord."

Funniest line: Fox Sports Spencer Tillman After true freshman Penn State RB Tyler Holzworth was given a running play, "Once again the bucket list is officially empty."

Best forsight: Fox Sports Devin Gardner, "In my keys to the game I said K State needed to make Schaben beat them, something he's been unable to do so far."
Adam Alexander responded, "Outside of the opening drive to the endzone he's thrown 2 interceptions and had a series of punts. "

Best stat: With 9 minutes left until Halftime ABC's Kirk Herbstreit said Texas and TCU have combined for 49 yards on offense in the first half but had 55 yards combined in penalties.

Funniest comment: ESPN’s Chris Fowler. after referee Michael VanderVelde announces yet another penalty in TCU/Texas, "We'd like to welcome Michael VanderVelde, part of the broadcast team tonight," adding to partner Kirk Herbstreit: "He's getting more air time than either one of us."

Call to action: With 6 minutes remaining in the 1st Half, ABC's Chris Fowler asked ESPN stats to perform a quick research on when the last time was that 2 Big 12 teams had a scoreless first half. Within a minute stats provided a graphic showing it was Oct 27, 2007: Kansas vs. Texas A&M.

Best interview: ABC's Kirk Herbstreit said he talked to TCU coach Sonny Dykes about analytics, and Dykes told him the thing with analytics is that common sense must always come first.

Best stat: ABC's Chris Fowler said Texas has trended to score inside 2 minutes in the first half. They've scored within 2 minutes in 5 of the last 6 games.

Best exchange: ESPN's Courtney Lyle and Ryan Leaf...
Leaf: "Kansas State is dominating Baylor. If they and TCU hold out, it's looking like an all purple final."
Lyle: "Do you like purple?"
Leaf: "I hate purple. Or at least a certain shade of it."
Lyle: "Says the former Wazzu Coug."

Best forsight: Fox Sports' Petros Papadakis stated one of the things that makes Wisconsin's D successful is they disguise coverage and blitzes with lots of activity upfront.

Biggest surprise: Fox Sports' Dan Hellie and Petros Papadakis spent the entire pregame discussing how Wisconsin and Iowa rely on their running games and always have a back present only for Iowa to have 5 WR's and no RB out on their first 3rd Down.

Top information: Dave Neal told SEC Network viewers that Vanderbilt, playing at Kentucky, has 2 players with over 100 yards rushing for the 1st time in an SEC game since 2002 vs. Ole Miss.

Strongest comment: SECN Deuce McAllister, after Kentucky RB Chris Rodriguez goes to the sidelines following 2 strong runs againstVanderbilt. “I know that you're beat up as a running back but your offense needs you. You can't come out of the game after 1 or 2 plays."

Top call: SECN Dave Neal, as Vanderbilt ends a conference losing streak dating back to 2019 with a 24-21 victory at Kentucky, “It's intercepted by Vanderbilt, and let the celebration begin -- the streak is over at 26!"

Best stat: CBS Sports John Sadak telling viewers that the Wyoming/Colorado State rivalry has spanned 3 different centuries.

Best stat: CBS Sports John Sadak, after Colorado State scored a touchdown on a punt return that it was their first since November of last year.

Clever line: Fox Sports Tim Brando, on a replay of Penn State TE Brenton Strange catching a TD, “Nothing strange about your TE effectively at Penn State.”

Top analysis: Fox Sports Spencer Tillman noted that Maryland stayed in this single look so they could affect the run game. They need to be more aggressive.

Top observation: Fox Sports Tim Brando told viewers that Maryland QB Taulia (Tagovailoa) is not as verbal as his bother Tua. He’s more quiet. He leads by example. Right now the example is a little timid.

Best info: SECN Tom Hart, related a conversation w/ Texas A&M’s Antonio Johnson where Johnson said he grew up in East St. Louis, a rough & tumble town, & it impacted his recruiting because they didn’t play Friday nights. They played Saturday afternoon, which affected teams ability to visit since they usually had their teams games during that time.

Best interview: SECN Cole Cubelic interviewing a joyful Auburn HC Carnell Williams. Cubelic perfectly let Williams express his joy and thanks without interruption.

Top observation: CBS Sports Randy Cross noted Wyoming instead of twisting and going sideways on stunts wants to get up the field. They want to get in the A and B gaps and penetrate.
