Saturday's News and Notes by Rudy Martzke (Nov 13, 2021 edition)

 

Best move: ESPN got Ole Miss Coach Lane Kiffin to be the Celebrity Guest picker. Some may take issue of an active coach, but let’s give Kiffin some credit for being willing to accept the invitation. 

Best stat: ESPN’s Sean McDonough noted after Penn State converted on a FG on the opening drive that it’s the first time all season that Michigan hadn’t scored first this season. Michigan scored first in the previous nine games.

Best stat: ESPN’s Sean McDonough told viewers that this is the first game that Michigan has trailed in the 1st Quarter all season. 

Awkward moment: ESPN’s Booger McFarland, after an in game highlight going back to Auburn/Mississippi State,  “Sean, can you ask Dan [Orlovsky] what it feels like to be benched?”

Top info: ESPN’s Kris Budden told viewers that Mississippi State has rounded up 40 candidates to tryout for kicker. 

Strongest comment: ESPN’s Bob Wischusen, “Its hard to believe if Oklahoma wins out they won’t be in the College Football Playoffs. Right now they are looking in.” 

Best line: Fox Sports Gus Johnson on Spencer Rattler, “He went from early preseason Heisman favorite to backup Quarterback.” 

Strongest comment: ESPN’s Bob Wischusen, on the targeting call on Auburn, “There have been some moments in this game where the crowd has booed a call and we have defended the call and said the right call was made. If I’m sitting out there at Jordan-Hare and an Auburn fan, I'm booing along with the rest of them." 

Top observation: ESPN’s Bob Wischusen noted with Auburn trailing 43-34 that they should have kicked the extra point to keep it a 1 possession game instead of going for a 2 point attempt. 

Top production: ESPN showed UCF coach Gus Mahlzan coaching on a raised platform as he recovers from a broken leg.

Best moment: CBS Sports Gary Danielson remembered the late legendary broadcaster Pat Summerall and his famous quote, “You always have more time than you think.” 

Best stat: Fox Sports Dan Hellie told viewers that Washington is the only team in the FBS to score on all possessions in the red zone this year. 

Top observation: SEC Network’s Cole Cubelic, on LSU QB Max Johnson, “I understand coverage might be good, but that mental clock has to help him understand nobody’s home and tuck it and go.”

Strongest comment: Fox Sports Tim Brando, on TCU QB Chandler Morris, "We’ve been doing this a long time. I’m pushing my fifth decade of covering this, and I’ve never seen a freshman do what this young man did last week in his debut.” 

Best line: SEC Network’s Cole Cubelic, on Arkansas' offense, “I want to know what your baseline offensive is right now for Kendall Briles right now. There hasn’t been a lot of consistency to move the ball.” 

Top observation: Fox Sports Petros Papadakis noted on Arizona State/Washington that rain can really shock (ASU) young players because it doesn't rain in the desert. Rain, environment, crowd, your play calling and how opponents are are all factors. Arizona State's young players have adapted very well. 

Best stat: SEC Network’s Tom Hart noted LSU blitzed during the first 8 games on 7% of their opponents plays. Then he pointed out that they blitzed on 63% of Alabama's plays last week. 

Best line: Fox Sports Tim Brando, on no flag being called on a hold, “I’m ok with letting it go, but to a point where you are seeing the jersey being pulled, you've got to throw the little yellow hanky.  

Best Timing Award: Fox Sports Spencer Tillman told viewers that, "if the Oklahoma State can get protection for the QB they have a shot in the center of the field if they bend this over route by the slot defender." The next play was a TD. Tillman noted it was their all series. 

Best line: SEC Network’s Tom Hart, on LSU/Arkansas game, “It feels like these both of these sides have nothing to lose.” 

Best moment: Fox Sports got Hall of Famer Barry Sanders to join Tim Brando and Spencer Tillman in the booth on Saturday. Sanders was inducted into Oklahoma State’s Ring of Honor on Saturday. 

Best comment: Fox Sports Tim Brando noted that Barry Sanders was the first Heisman winner that got promoted by the evolution of cable television. Brando noted CNN Sports Tonight and ESPN both bought a satellite on a popsicle truck.   
Best production: SEC Network production team getting a shot of the Arkansas team lifting “The Battle of the Boot Trophy” and walking with it towards the locker room for the first time since 2015.
